I was up there all May this year. The winter was still in full swing when we got there May 2nd, lakes all frozen still which prevented us from using boats until later. We were still able to get our 4 hunters bears but had to work much harder. There are a lot of bears on the Penninsula and a lot of large bears.
The season on the Penninsula is in the spring on even years and fall in the odd years. Personnally, I like the spring better because I think you get better bears, both size and the hair is much better. The spring is a tougher hunt physically because the bears are just coming out of hibernation and they are wondering around. The fall bears are more concentrated on the rivers.
The area we hunt is in the refuge so we have no other outfitters to deal with. Flying around the area, we would see other camps located in some poor areas just because they have to setup where they can land so an important question to ask is exactly where you'll be hunting.
This year we took two bears over 10', one over 9 and the other was 8'10". It was a tough year down there since most outfitters usually have a very high success rate but this year, we heard most only went 50%.

Warren Johnson was the guide/outfitter

This was NOT my bear! My father and I visted the lodge to hang-out and fish while exploring the penninsula. The bear had been killed a couple of days prior. Don't know much about bears myself. I think they said it was very close to 12X12....

PS: Fullcry , I see by your link that you've been there??? ;) Also, those feet on that bear are HUGE!!!!!!!

RE: Peninsula Brown Bears Hunts

Wow, that is VERY cool that you guide there! My dad and I were visiting a salmon fishing buddy of ours that was based out of Sand Point in late May of 96. We explored for a couple of weeks with him on his boat, and then spent 4 or 5 days or so at the lodge. (our commercial fishing buddy was a friend/acquaintance of Warren's) Were you guiding there then?

Anyway, we arrived at the lodge right at the end of the bear season. All of the hunters were gone, but Warren and some of the skinners/guides were still there. Had a great time listening to stories in that great lodge and catching Dollys all day long! ;) They had a spunky little cocker spaniel named Party Girl that would chase bears off, I think.... lol Cool history at that place!

I've never hunted bears, but I've been intrigued with those big brown suckers ever since that trip!

judging from the hoof shown in post #1, I doubt it will be put to "shame" by anything...
