I am planning to go after sitkas and was wondering what all items I should be getting. I'm thinking a Mossberg JIC shotgun loaded with buckshot then slugs, carried on a sling at all times. Plus either a SPOT or SARlink. Any suggestions?

Just hunt your sitkas with a .375, leave the shotgun at home.
SPOT - good, maybe rent a satellite phone. Flares, strobe light?
A fat, slow buddy.

The ACR PLB's are great. rent Satellite phone, "bug spray" talk to someone up there that know's what works best. Bug headcover screen and gloves in case of biting flies. Besides the "fat slow buddy" ...It is always nice to have a second backup buddy that is a good shot with that shotgun...

If you are on a DIY hunt and not with a guide then...below..

NEVER walk anywhere in the back country "even behind a tree" without that shotgun..be smart..think smart..If you hunt alone or with only one backup buddy leave a written map/trip plan location visible on the dash of your vehicle. Use the Satillite phone to contact someone daily at a set time for safety. Pick up some scentkiller spray products, spray/wash your cloths, pack etc. If you are as scent free as possible in camo then maybe the bears won't smell you as easy and have you for dinner..

Good hunt'n....Don't become the hunted...:)

Also: call ahead and get the local Sheriff Dept. phone# to have with you as well as to leave with a contact person at home.

Leave a written paper at home with your contact person, include vehicle description, lic.# State, etc., general hunting location..and update in the field if you change areas. Thats when the satillite phone really is worth every penny..
"Hunt safe go home safe"...

Take first aid supplies from home, take larger injury pads and tape for bad cuts, pick up a pack of this stuff called "quick clot" in case you get a bad cut and your life is in danger from bleeding...very light no wieght issue in your pack.

Pickup a good quality backpacking head lamp that flashes for location and carry extra batteries, take a GPS, extra batteries and know how to use the GPS...mark your camp, vehicle locatons..
