Hi all-
The wife and I drew McNeil River permits for the end of June! Super excited about it and looking for info from anybody with a serious opinion.
Anticipating flying into Anchorage a couple days early. Then take a day drive down to Homer. Stay the night there and go for a halibut fishing trip. Bush flight outta Homer to the reserve and back to Anchorage at the end.
Would love some input from any of you guys that have been to McNeil on what to take, what to wear, and what to use for photography/videoing.No electricity available for battery charging makes this one challenging.
Also love input on some small outta the way places to lodge 2 different nights in Anchorage and 1 night in Homer. B&B style is awesome. Just want to avoid the chain motel thing.
Advice on charter boats for a halibut trip would be awesome...and is the end of June even good for the halibut? Really dont want to go out on a boat with 10 other people... been there done that and didnt enjoy it.Preferably a smaller outfit?
I see there are a certain number of flying outfits that are permitted to fly in there.Any recommendations? Beluga Lake, Emerald Air, Northwind, and Steller Air are the ones listed on ADFG website.
My first Alaska trip...even though Ive been dreaming of it since I was a kid.If youd rather talk than type, IM me your number and a good time. I will call you for sure!

I make two or three trips to AK every year and all into the bush. Just take 3-4 high capacity batteries with you and you'll be fine. Don't have any info on the charters though, never been to McNeil. Be sure and post the pics when you get back!

Thanks man...was starting to wonder if anybody read the Alaska threads. Surely some of our friends have been there?
Pretty excited though. Got airline tickets bought and working on getting floatplane reservations lined up. Crazy tide makes flying on the day we wanted hard to impossible, so having to rearrange plans to be able to spend an extra day at the reserve. All a learning experience for this guy. Been dreaming of it and now its gonna happen!

Ok after reading your post and thinking on it for a while here is what I would do if I were doing your trip. I have made that once in a lifetime trip up to AK myself over 10 times and ended up living up there for over 8 years. I also have worked in Homer for a few summer and love that place. If I were to do a halibut charter like i do almost every year I would go with Ninilchik Salt Water Charters they are in the town called yeah you guessed it Ninilchik. they are a 6 pack boat but will go out with only 3 sometimes and they offer awesome fishing, they are friendly and get you into some big fish. Hit it on your way down and they will process all your fish and flash freeze it for you to pick up on your way back to Anchorage. Their number is 907-567-3611 it is around $200 per person might have gone up due to gas prices. Once in Homer stay at Memerable Experience B&B on of the best view in all of Alaska. their number is 800-720-9275 # 7374. Make sure you go out on the Spit and hit Caption Patties for dinner some of the best sea food in the world.Make sure you stop by the Homer Brewing Company for some good micro brew Alaska Style. I have done a fly out with Baluga air and they are awesome to. Either going there or coming back I would stay on the Kenai river in the cabin that our on the river with Alaska River Company 1-888-595-1226. they are right on the river plus offer world class fishing for salmon and rainbow. There a B&B that I have used in Anchorage called Alaska Frontier Gardens the number is 907-345-6556. I would hit up the Moose's Tooth for awesome pizza and beer in Anchorage also the Snow Goose brewery. Make sure you take your camera and lots of bug spray. Have a good trip and post some picture of the bears when you get back.
