Here's a link to a video/article about our 2011 Southeast Alaska Adventure

We learned a lot, and I certainly would love to go back, but I would definitely do a fly in hunt to the Yukon with an outfitter next time. I hope there is some info about Southeast Alaska here that could benefit somebody entertaining the idea of a DIY hunt there.

Best of Luck,
Jeff

I wouldn't give up on an Alaskan moose hunt just yet. The area you hunted is not the best area for finding big bulls. You'd be better off hunting the mainland in areas like Tok, areas north of Fairbanks, ie the Yukon River, the Alaska peninsula, to name a few. If I were coming to Alaska to hunt moose, SE Alaska isn't where i'd go.

Thanks for the info, AKNomad,

We learned a little too late, that Southeast Alaska DIY is a big gamble, especially for Moose with a bow.

We put our trust in a guy who took great care of us, but didn't really know the story on Moose in that area. No regrets, it was awesome just to be up in that country.

We will be taking your advice if and when we return. Seems that unless you are a local, you are much better off hiring an outfitter, at least to drop you in somewhere.

Best of Luck,
Jeff

Honestly, you can do a diy moose hunt in Alaska just by digging aournd on the internet. There are LOTS of hunters that come up here every year and kill nice bulls, all on diy hunts. If you want a real adventure with a good chance of bagging a bull moose, consider doing a float hunt. Yes, you will have to hire an air charter but it's well worth it IMO. I did one in 06, got a decent bull and never saw another hunter in 8 days of hunting.

Exactly what I am looking for next time! I hope to get back up there in a couple years, I
now have a personal vendetta with moose!

Best of Luck,
Jeff
