A buddy and myself are looking to do a Kodiak Sitka Blacktail hunt in 2013. Do you guys have any good references on any good outfitter/transporter?

We have been talking to Ninilchik Charters, anybody have any prior experience with them?

Thank you all for your help.

I highly recommend Alaska Costal Marine. Great accomidations, food and crew. They will do EVERYTHING in there power to ensure you have the trip you came to Alaska for. PM or email me if youd like more information or pictures. Good luck!

I would not hesitate to go with Mike and Ninilchik charters, I have gone bear hunting with him off the same boats you would use many times and always a great trip. My friend Jim Zumbo has done the blacktail trip with him numerous times and Jim has nothing but good things to say as well.

I can personnaly vouch for Jake Jefferson. Jake has guided me on two succesfull hunts, a Dall and a Mt. Goat. You will not find a better person to hunt with or one that will work harder to make it one of those special ones that you always want to talk about.

I hunted with Homer Ocean last year and we had a great hunt. It was my second trip to Kodiak and after two starkly contrasting experiences, I will offer this bit of advice:

-Being on a boat was much better than a cabin or lodge.
There was much more mobility to hunt different areas of the island. Especially as a bowhunter, it was nice to not have to hunt the same 4 square miles that 47 other rifle hunters had covered for the past two months.
-Be in great shape.
Kodiak is a tough island. It is not for the ill-conditioned. If the snow level is 2000 foot or higher, you will be climbing everyday. And the terrain can be nasty.

All that being said, it is an amazing place. If you have good weather on the float plane out to hunt, it is almost worth the price of the entire hunt. The deer are not hard to hunt. It is the weather and terrain of the island that makes this hunt difficult. If you get a little help from the island, and there is a good populationg of deer on the island, you will have a blast!
I will personally make this hunt every few years until I can no longer move.

Good luck!
