Who's goin' fishin' in Alaska this year?

I will be on the Deshka for a week goin' after Kings looks like it's shapeing up for a good run, then off to the Russian/Kenai combat zone for a bunch of Red's and fat Rainbows for a week.
A day in Homer and a day in Seward pukein' in the salt, then off to the Bush company for a few hours before my flight home.
Same ol thing every year, but I gotta fill the freezer somehow. :)

Good luck to all that head North this year.

When are you coming up?

Didn't realize the Deshka was shaping up to be anything better than abismal... Good luck, hope you fill the freezer. They lowered the limit, and shortened the king season on the Valley streams. The Deshka is about the only one open, lots of boats.

The early red run is sucking as bad as last year so far.

432 Kings through the weir as of the 6th, that's about average on this date for the last dozen years, the Deshka has failed to meet minimum escapement for only 2 years out of the last dozen, that was in 08 and 09,I'm guessing that was due to the nasty flood , it has exceeded the max escapement 8 out of 12 years, Those numbers are whats leading me to think it's shapeing up. :)

Anyways the Deshka seems to hold her own better than most, I'm betting that the fish will start showing Several hundred a day in the next week, if all goes according to the 10 year average there should be 1000 plus a day moving up around the 10th/12th and I predict that she will exceed 20'000 fish through the weir this year. I will be there the 10th thru the 16th, right at the peak of the run.

No doubt there's gonna be plenty of boats and folks but there always is, I have a 16.5 Zodiac with a 40 horse jet, we join the hogline at the mouth early am then head up to some sweet spots above the weir later in the day with fly poles.
I'm not to worried about the 2 fish limit I only keep one fish on the last day anyway, all the rest are C&R,, I make my meat with them tasty Reds and butt's.

I don't know much about the Red run yet but I have read that they are already staging at the santuary so that could be a good sign, I think they start the weir count today for the reds.
I will be on the Russian 17th thru 23rd should be peaking then to.
I usually just hike up about half way to the falls if there in the Russian, if not then I hike down to the powerline on the Kenai, if I don't find em either of those places I will run down to bings or jims and meet em there andif they ain't there well there's always good time Charlies, Heh-heh.

Fish or no fish I plan on having a good time, and I won't be at work so that's a plus. :)

Im going up to Cordova in September for coho. This will be my 3rd fishing trip to AK, but first to Cordova. Hope it's good!

How was the fishing?

Not looking like the Deshka will make escapment goals this year, which sucks.

Haven't hit the RR yet, but have a few friends that took a few fish. Might run down later this week after work one night to check out the fun.

We hit a river east of town last weekend, and put a dozen reds in the freezer. Slow start, but ended up catching 9 in about 30 minutes. I'm glad summer is here...

EO's pretty much across the the KP for kings until July 1. Looks like the red run is going to be similar to last year on the Kenai, or so the prediction is. Only bad part about that is we fill the freezer in a day and no more "fishing" with a net, and have to revert to the rod and reel. :D

Nice batch of Reds you got there,I'd sure like to try my hand at dipnetting some day, especially out of a boat, can a non-res even go a long for the ride?

No doubt the Deshka was lookin' kinda iffy, and still is, surprised me a little that they shut her down though, but damn glad they did. Looking like it will make minimum escapement still this year, 400 fish to go and still getting decent numbers through the weir.

We hit her just right though some pretty good numbers moving through that week, plenty of C&R I didn't catch anything bigger than 30# couple of my buddy's hooked up on some pushing 40# plus.

Not sure what to do bout next year, we were planning on going a little later get some Reds first then have Mayhays drop us off up Clear creek for a week but looks like they shut down the Clear creek already this year, ain't looking to good for the Kings.

The Reds were kinda tough to come by this year, and last year for that matter,we did manage to limit each day but a couple'a days seemed more like a job than fishin', didn't fish the Kenai hardly at all,
pretty much stayed on the Russian the whole week, high water sure made it tougher to get em landed but still plenty of fun.
All in all we had a great time, the only real disappointment was the Bush company, the quality has slowly been sliding down hill for the past few years, gettin' alot like the Crazy horse just more gals.

Have a great summer,happy bonkin',,,, :)

Thanks for the report runamuk. I've been following the plight of the kings up there, not pretty.

The late run Kenai reds should be comming soon. It's a pink year too.
