Heading to the Kenai peninsula next week to fish. Friend told me not to even buy a king stamp, that the run is dismal this year. Is that what you are seeing/ hearing?

Last I heard was that both the Kenai and Kasilof are catch and release only. Kings under 20" or over 55" can be kept on the Kenai. Keep an eye on the emergency orders from F&G, as they are subject to change as the run develops.

You're still in good shape as the sockeye run will explode any day now. Catch some halibut too.

Catching a King under 20" would be rare!

And me catching one over 50" would even be rarer!:D

My Dad just got back,He did catch Quite a few Halibut, but nothing like other years!

Is Alaska managing like TARDville?

Bobcat, I hear they're going to make the Kenai a LE Unit. 50 King tags a year. SFW will get 10 tags to raffle off at the convention in Utah. There will be landowner tags also. Part of the river will be on a general tag, open all of May. A late archery season August 1st-15th. and a muzzy season for Kings over 50":) It's all about opportunity.:)

Well, they have closed the king salmon season for the year effective midnight Wednesday night!

And the rumor is that they may increase the limit on reds. Hope so!

Sounds good to me. Surely they will raise it before our return. Thanks for all the advice last night. Am buying my wife some polarized shooting/safety glasses tomorrow before we leave.

Although, the did take a deep dip in numbers in both the Kasilof and Kenai yesterday:

Good luck on your trip... don't count your chickens (fish) before they're in the freezer. Lots of people have trouble filling a 3 fish limit when there are 100,000 fish going by. Just say'n. :D

We ran into a few last weekend.

Some of the bucks were 10-12lbs

More carnage this weekend... I hope. Probalby be a big push early next week. The upper river should be fishing next week as well.

We did well, and could have done better if we had kept fishing. Ended up with 50 lbs of halibut and 50 of reds between my wife and I. Lots of people getting their limit of 6 reds(they upped the limit the day we got there) but we wanted to see more of Alaska than just fishing. Had a close encounter with a young grizzly (30 yards) and not sure I am going to be able to get my wife to fish the Russian in the future!
