Ak Moose Recommendations

I was wondering if anyone has any recomendations for fly in services to use for moose in Alaska. I am looking to do a DIY moose hunt in 2013. I would prefer to do some sort of drop camp with a tent set up and a boat for an area. The drop with a tent is not completely necessary. I am open to a drop float type hunt, but it seems like it would be logistically challenging. I am trying to do this on somewhat of a budget. I will be going with one or two other people. Thanks for the help.

I recently did a lot of research on the same thing and ended up booking papa bear for this fall. Steve with PB has be great to deal with so far. Can not wait for the hunt

elkz, if you are looking to go this year, you may be out of luck. Most good charter services book quickly when they open up for booking (Nov - Jan). I would Google AK hunting charters or try this web address: http://bucktrack.com/Alaska_Air_Taxis.html It is fairly comprehensive, but I do not know if it is up to date. I would start calling every place you can find to see if anyone has an opening.

What kind of budget are you talking about? For a lower 48 hunter, most likely you are going to spend approx. $4-$6K on your hunt. The further west and north of Anchorage you get, the higher the costs are. I have seen charters from around $600 - $5K depending on the distance and amount of gear you have.

Float hunts can be done with the proper planning, but it does increase the costs. If you go back to page 3 or 4, I believe there a couple of posts about past float hunts where I outlined some of the costs.

If you need any help, let me know and I'll try to help out. I primarily float hunt for Moose.

Good luck,

We used Papa Bear Adventures in 2012 and had such a great trip we are tentatively planning a repeat in 2014.

Its not up to date... I would bet half of those listed are either not in business or do not fly in hunters. Lots of air taxis but not all are licensed to fly hunters.

Figure out where you want to go then call the local bio, or contact the "chamber of commerce" in the town and ask about air taxis. I also believe the fish and game has a list of licensed transporters. Everyone knows everyone in small town AK. Once you talk to a pilot or two they'll give you all sorts of leads for charters.

Good luck
