LAST EDITED ON Dec-22-12 AT 04:37AM (MST)[p]Friend of mine guides for Halibut up there, Lynn Keogh. Sourdough Charters. I've been out with him before, got into tons of fish. Ask him about when he got chewed up by a Grizzly! Great guy, you'll have lots of fun.

Stay away from the big party boats with 20 people on them. Try hard to get on a six pack. Way more fun. We went out of DeepCreek with the tractors to launch your boat on the beach. Our boat was called The Unforgiven and we got nice fish for all 6. I have been to Alaska 3 times and fished Homer 2 times each trip and last year we hit homer one day and DeepCreek the other. I won't even go to Homer again unless i have someone who hasn't ever been.

I have gone twice with Rainbow Charters.Always caught fish, but not big ones,30-50 pounds, but it was cheap and we were there for the salmon.

Going out of Homer can be good, but I think there are better options, especailly if all you want is halibut.

Ninilchik Charters is who I'd go with for a 'meat' hunt. Don't expect to boat big halibut with anyone, as its fishing. The average fish caught in Cook Inlet is about 17 lbs. If you get recomendations or charters that tell you that you will catch a boat load of 40-60lbers they're full of BS. I've probably been fishing in the inlet 25 days or more in the last 4 years. For every 40-60lber you boat you're going to have to catch 10 smaller ones.

The best "big fish" caught out of Homber are taken in the gulf, which is about a 2 hour boat ride south. Weather dependent this is where you can get into the big fish with some regularity. You have to hit everything right, and the fish have to be there to make it happen however. I've been in the gulf about a dozen times and have hit it perfect one time and we came back with nothing but 40-60+ pounders for 5 guys. If you want to go that far book a muli-species trip or even overnight, and go out of Seward instead. You'll still catch halibut (some big ones), but can get into ling cod, rock fish and yellow eye which are 10x more fun to fish for than halibut, IMO. Not to mention better eating. The ride out of Seward is a bit shorter, and a prettier boat ride.

Good luck on your trip.

This was a "good day" in the Gulf.

Take a look at Seward Fish company. We went with Randy two years ago and it was an awesome trip. Full, limits of halibut, salmon, rockfish and a couple trophy ling cod. His websites has some great info and we liked Seward allot more than Homer.
