Ive been reading everyones posts that say Im going such and such time. What have the results been ? Caribou is my main topic.

In 2010 I hunted the Alaska Range near Healy for Dall Sheep. I never saw a legal ram. I also never saw a grizzly bear, black bear, wolf or legal moose.

I didn't have a caribou tag, they were by drawing and I did see one small caribou bull.

If I had tags for all of these animals the one caribou bull would have been the only legal animal I saw.

Bowhunted for caribou on the North Slope with Brooks Range Aviation out of Bettles last fall. Two of us were on the tundra for nine days beginning in late August. Last day of hunting was Labor Day.

Terrain wasn't exactly bowhunter friendly. We only managed to fill one tag out of four. That said, we saw caribou every day. Most were in herds of 10-12 animals, but did see a few larger herds. Both of us could have tagged out the first day with rifles. Getting within 100 yards of the bou wasn't very difficult. Getting within 50 yards of the bou was nearly impossible.

In addition to caribou, we saw one grizzly (about 200 yards from camp) and one white wolf.

A caribou hunt is along the lines of an antelope hunt in WY. You'll either be covered up by them, or you won't see any/many. It all depends on where and when you go. Some areas just don't hold much game, others are corridors, and some areas only part of the year. Alaska is a HUGE state, with varied terrain, and many different caribou herds. The herds winter/summer range can vary greatly from year to year.

If I had to chose "when" it would be in early/mid September because they'll be bunched up by then, and the leaves will be dropping... Where, that's up to you.

I've had some amazing DIY caribou hunts in AK. Last year I hunted on my own and shot a pretty decent bull.
