LAST EDITED ON Apr-11-14 AT 04:07PM (MST)[p]I'm looking to go to Alaska fish. I don't care to fish the ocean. I just want to fish the rivers. I'll do either self guided or guided. Just want you guys that have gone give me your input where and how to go about it.

Buck1, we need some more info to give you some input. Where in Alaska do you want to go? What time of the year are going to be here? Road system or flyout? What fish do you want to fish for, large Rainbows, Silvers, Kings, Reds, Pike?

More than willing to help out, but I will say that I live in Anchorage, so my experience deals with the surrounding areas.

Well I'd like to catch a lot of fish. So if rainbows are the one then, thats good. Or if one is better than the other, than thats good. I just love to fish and want to catch a lot. I don't care for the pike though. If it's better fishing to fly in then that works. If its just as good to drive to, then thats good. I have never been to Alaska. So I want to see pretty mountains and catch a lot of fish on a river. I'd like to go before September though. I have big bulls to chase here in Utah.

Super easy. A few years ago my 10 yr old son and myself flew to Anchorage and rented a car. We took throw away hip boots, river fishing gear, afew clothes and a small tent and bags.Rented a small car and got grocerys and ice chest at Fred Myers n Anchorage.Drove north on Parks hwy for a few days, caught grayling and pinks. Checked out Denali and camped n the trees where ever we ended up. Drove south to the PENNISULA and stayed n campgrounds with all the tourists (shower time).Caught tons of chromer reds and a bunch of dollies. Last 2 days stayed n a B&B to freeze our limits of reds and went on a charter outta SEWARD and caught limits of everything we wanted..silvers, lings, halibut and big rockfish. Flew home with 170lbs of fillets and tons of pics. Spent just under 3,000$ for 8 days. We will remember it for the rest of our lifes. Just go with the flow, make your res with B&B and any charters. Good raingear a must. BH1

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

Good idea booking a B&B on the last day to freeze your fish. A lot of them up here have free freezers for customers. That way you can freeze your fish, get cleaned up and have a good night's rest before you head home.

Buck look at the Togiak river. Buddy and I spent 9 days floating the river from Togiak lake, absolute blast! Went early July. Flew into Dillingham and chartered a float plane to drop us off and picked upped down river. Caught everything from kings to rainbows. Take some good rain gear and deet whoever you go. Heading back there next August for the silver run.

I've done each of these. Had a ball on each. Don't go for kings, unless you are happy with a fish or two a day, although it is awesome to catch a 46 lb. fish. I love the float trips, but cost more and take a lot of work. Guided trips you catch more, cost more. Silvers has been the most consistent for us. Reds can be amazing, but snag a lot of fish and combat fishing.

My favorite trip is a float trip, but I'm ok with bears and have all the gear. It is a remote Alaska experience! Just go and 2 years later do a different trip.

Don't go at the beginning of a run, or they will come in late. Don't go at the end, or they will come early that year.
