SKUNKED

Well, I guess I'm done sulking. Got skunked in AK. They had to float us down a different river than we had planned, where there were no caribou, so we were only after moose. 13 days and 50 miles of river only produced a few cows. There were more in there, but just didn't have luck on our side. I did, however, drop about 20 pounds. I told the air guide they should advertise the hunt as a "weight-loss program, with opportunity to harvest a moose". :)

Sorry to hear you got skunked. I guess even in Alasaka there are no guarantees. At least you were able to keep your sense of humor about the "weight loss program". LOL I showed this to my wife. She said "20 pounds in 13 days, where can I sign up"

You'll get them next time

I missed you up at the lodge by about a day. Rob told me they put you guys on a different river. We actually came home a week earlier than planned. We did the caribou thing, and the river we were going to float for moose was to low to land on. So that along with some other things and we scratched the moose hunt. We all got our caribou though. Weren't you originally going to float the Aniak? What river did you end up on?

We should have decided to go on a caribou hunt. We were suppose to be on the Aniak, but they put us on the Iditarod River instead. I wish they had let us know ahead of time, so we could have gotten some maps of the area, but that's the way it goes. I'm glad I went, I learned a lot for next time. Congrats on the caribou.

Dan....Sorry to hear about the skunk...Of my five trips to Alaska I was skunked on one and shot only a cow caribou on another... That's hunting...The weather and others factors can always screw you, especially in a place as harsh but wonderful as Alaska...

However, every trip was a REAL learning experience...Some lessons were harder than others, but every hunt has been a memorable and worthwhile experience...

I'm planning to do another unguided moose hunt in 2006, so it will be fun to get together and share some information...

Talked to my guide friend. Don't feel too bad. They had hunters out and saw about 5 caribou in a few days. Moved to a better spot and went up to seeing over 800 but NO bulls. No one could figure except the hot weather had it messed up. So Bou might have been about as good as moose. The Iditarod holds some really good bulls. Saw a few from up there last fall when in Aniak. The Aniak can hold some good ones too. (Heck I guess they all do....)

Going again in 2006 wanting a moose, but what are the odds?? I think about 25%. Ironically my buddy had one moose hunter in and they got one close to 70 I think.

We all get skunked. Just hurts a bit more when you are from so far away. Just got back from the NM Muzzy hunt. Was skunked there on good muleys. Had one pinned about 160 or so 5x4. But he was busted out by an elk hunter and never found him back. Did see a nice big 6x6 bull less than 100 yards(of course no tag...)
