Looking for suggestions/ideas on a fun trip to Alaska for me and the wife. We've never been to Alaska and not quite sure on where to go. We would like to fish for at least a day or two and my wife has always wanted to sea the northern lights. Our anniversary is in April but it looks like the better time for fishing is later in the year? Any suggestions on a specific city that would fit what we are looking for?

I'm going to Soldotna in July with my wife and son. We'll be fishing for Sockeyes mainly, but hope to get at least one day in for Silvers or Kings depending what's hot. We have been before to King Salmon, Alaska for Kings and did one fly-out for Rainbows, Grayling, and Char. I think for the Northern Lights you need to go later in the year. If you can get to one of the Sportsman's shows there are many different Outfitters that you can meet with and talk dates and activites. Good luck, you can't go wrong with Alaska! You can also take a cruise up the inland passage. There are several stops along the way were you can fish, sight see, shop, take a helicopter up to a glacier. The train ride from Seward to Ancorage is amazing.

I live in Alaska. Maybe I can help. I'd fly to Anchorage and take the train up into Danali Park. It's a beautiful ride into a beautiful park. It's faster to drive a car but you'd miss an awesome train ride. You can't fish in the park but if you drive up, there's great stream and lake fishing on the way.

Rent a car in Anchorage and drive down the Kenai Peninsula. Be sure to stop at Portage glacier. Drive down to Seward and eat at Ray's Waterfront. Get a table in the back below the bar part. Awesome view of the harbor. You can book a fishing charter and fish a day or two. Or you could drive down the west side of the Kenai to Soldotna and Homer and book a fishing trip or fish the Kenai for Kings on your own.

You could fly to Ketchakan and book a fishing trip there. Be SURE to stay at the Gillmore. It's styled like a 1930s hotel complete with feather beds. Your wife would love that! You could also take the ferry up through the inner passage to Juneau and fly home from there. Both ferry systems will let you camp on top or the back deck if you wanted to go cheap.

Fly to Kodiak (where I live, kind of) and charter a fishing trip with Kodiak Combos or Lee Robbins at Downtown Bed and Breakfast. You owe it to yourself to go on a bush plane while you're here. Our islands are ungody beautiful from a bush plane. I have flown with many different pilots so I could recommend some of the best ones. Here's and tip that only locals know about. You can catch a "seat fare" for $95 on most of the regular routes. The bushpilots deliver groceries, mail and supplies to us and many other remote places. I GUARANTEE you'll see Kodiak brown bears in our bay (Kitoi Bay) between June and the middle of November. I've been on the three-hour mail route several times going to/from Kodiak. $95 for a three hour bush plane flight! My wife left today on the grocery plane and is coming back Friday on the mail plane.

Or you could fly into Kodiak and visit our floating strip joint, spend a few days there and fly home broke. (Just kidding)

You can email me and I can help you with any questions. [email protected]

Damnation man! That all sounds like fun!
Hunters helping hunters... that's what it's all about.
