I turn 40 next year and my wife has agreed to let me go moose hunting in Alaska for my present. I am from New Mexico and have never been to Alaska but a buddy and I are looking at an outfitted, non-guided hunt through a company called Sportsmans Air Service. It costs $8,250 per person. Does anyone on this site have experience with Joe and his company? He was recommended by my buddies friend but just wanted to reach out to my fellow MMer's to see if anyone had information on these guys or any other recommendations. If anyone would like help with elk, mule deer, antelope, oryx, or coues deer hunting in NM I'd be happy to return the favor. Thanks so much, Lance.

$8K+ seems rather expensive. Papa bear adventures does an outfitted hunt for $5500, includes, tent, cot, kitchen set, fly in/out. Also don't have size restrictions on moose racks.

I am from NM too, and as soon as i came back from my DIY caribou hunt in 2013 I did my homework for my next alaska adventure. The two outfitters that i kept coming back too was Papa Bear and Renfro for drop camp DIY moose hunts. If your looking for a float trip and being from NM there is alot that needs to be considered and hiring a hunt planner like pristine adventures to set you up for DIY moose float hunt would be worth the money. These guys will give you the confidence everything is being take care of. The problem is these guys are booked out for several years. I got lucky with a cancellation this September instead of waiting till 2018. I will be going with Renfro. I would have gone with papa bear in heart beat too. If you ever decide on caribou let me know.

Good luck...

I have used Joe as a transporter in the past and again this year. He does what he says he will do. His drop hunters do better than we do. If your goal is an Alaskan trophy moose. I'd do it. Some areas he flies to are draw hunts so make sure you apply this year. I have also fished with papa bear and had a good experience. Good luck.

I second papa bear. My college room mate used to freelance/fly weekends for papa beat during his time in the army out of bethel. lots of moose up there

Lance,

We also went with Joe Schuster and good luck with him in 2012. I can't wait to go back. I was supposed to go in 2018 but my buddy bailed on me. So waiting to book again. You can pm me if you want info on his hunt.

Just got back, and I would go with Joe if doing an outfitted or fully guided hunt, but I won't use him again as a transporter. We were a day late getting in to the field and waited for 2 days to come out - with good weather. He puts his guided and outfitted hunters first and didn't really care that we missed hunting time or missed flights and work when not getting back as scheduled. He did advise up front about this, but was still very frustrating.
