Attempting to plan a hunt but have never hunted Alaska before. I am a non-resident and will be hunting with a new resident, unguided. I know there are limited units for non-residents. Was wondering if anyone could recommend the best area/unit to pursue. We are both experienced hunters and in good shape. Thank you for any input.

I assume the resident is a 2nd degree next of kin? If not you will be required to go with a guide. there are many places that have OTC tags. i'd start with figuring out a budget and start from there. there are some areas that you can walk in or ATV in but you will likely have more company. i'd recommend hiring a transporter to fly you in to a remote area so you can get away from some of the crowds. good luck.

I don't. you have a lot of research to do before you start talking to transporters. most area's have several transporters. you need to figure out what range you want to hunt and what your budget is. Calling the sheep biologists in various areas would be a good idea too. DIY sheep hunting is not an easy task and you won't get much help or info fed to you. good luck man.

depending on what range you want to go to will also be a big concern. If you want into the brooks range get ahold of bushwacker air-Jeff Kruse. great guy I flew with him 2x and always had a great time. price wise id budget about 3k for a transporter. feel free to reach out I have a lot of contacts in AK.

For open registration areas, there are the Wrangell Mtns, Alaska Range and Brook Range. You need to decide where you want to hunt. Brooks are the mellowest mountains of the three, but are a lot more remote and will cost more to fly out to. You'll be in competition with guides in the open areas, but a good transporter should keep you off of other's turf (even though it's public land).

For draw areas, you should look at the Alaska Draw Supplement that comes out in the fall with applications due Dec 15th. Doing a LE hunt with my son in Tok Mgmt Area this August. $900 per person for us to fly out in a Super Cub and it's one hunter at a time to get in/out.

What is an Open Registration area?

Anyhow... you can hunt in any of the seven mountain ranges in Alaska with a general harvest ticket.

Best of luck.
