Doing a drop camp hunt with a friend in September. We are base camping off a river so looking for advice on waders. Have done a ton of waterfowl hunting with standard neoprene waders in 3mm and 5mm with both stocking foot and boot foot. Thinking will be doing quite a bit more moving some wondering if Simms would be the way to go. Thanks for you help fellas

Never been to Alaska so take this for what it's worth, I'm booked for a brown bear hunt on the Penninsula this fall and my guide has directed me to purchase Simms Gore-Tex stocking foot waders and wading boots with lug soles (not felt). He says, and from what I've read and seen in the pictures, these will be my pants during this hunt. There are just too many rainy days and rivers to wade across for anything else to get the job done.

We did a drop camp for moose several years ago and drop for caribou last year. A couple of the guys had Simms stocking foot waders and like them. I had just a cheaper version (cabelas) stocking foot waders also that I used for both hunts. They worked great I thought. They were also chest waders, I would go with chest waders over hip waders everytime, just in case the water rises due to rain. That is what happened on the moose hunt. It rained so much the creek went from ankle deep to chest deep.

Good luck!

Just know, the deeper the water, the more buoyant you become and wading becomes more difficult. I've known anglers that don't go much past their thighs and other anglers that are chin-deep in the water.

I'll be on the Kenai in August for a boat based black bear hunt. Was told by the transporter hip boots or waders are a must have. I just can't imagine hunting all day in hip boots or chest waders? Found a product called Chota Tundra Hippies...which are a more robust version of their original Chota Hippies.

These Hippies are lightweight, breathable and can be worn at full extension as hip boots or reduced to normal gaiter height in seconds.

Per recommendation with the sales rep at Barney's in Anchorage, I'm pairing the Chota Tundra Hippies with a pair of Simms G3 Guide wading boots w/Vibram sole.

I'm hoping this combo is what the doctor ordered...but only time will tell. At this point, I'm all in!
