Sitka Bucks

I've caught the bug to hunt for Sitkas sometime in the near future, hoepfully in the next couple years. It seems to me like Kodiak and Afognak islands are good bets, but are there also some other hot spots? Does afognak have bears like Kodiak does? I'm slightly concerned about hunting with giant bears in the area. From what I've been able to gather Kodiak offers the best chance at a big buck though, right? Any other info that is needed to hunt these awesome looking critters? Thanks guys

I've got the Sitka bug too. Just got back this Nov from a boat trip on Kodiak during the rut. E-mail me for more info. Ed F

Griz is part of the adventure. The POW hunts are no piece of cake. Do your research. Good luck. I'll be back on Kodiak, Nov 2006!!! Ed F

Afognak's a pretty big island. It's north of the main island Kodiak. And it's got bears too. Even the smaller islands like Shuyak have the bears. Afognak's vegetation is much denser for the most part compared to south end of Kodiak. There are some really dense forests of old stand timber. Lots of the lands are native corporation on Afognak. But, they're selling off like the other native corporations up there at a faster and faster rate.

Most trophy hunters would hit the middle south and east side of Kodiak. But, I'm sure there some good ones harvested on Afognak too. There is also a good size herd of roosevelt elk running around on Afognak.

Bears there are usually pretty stuffed full of salmon. There's a ton of food for them to eat there from blueberries, salmon berries, moles, slopes worth of browse etc.
