My hunt is Aug 20th in the Alaska Range.I am thinking layered clothing starting with polypropelene, Cabelas fleece, and some lightweight rain gear. I 'm hoping the fleece won't be too warm.
Any suggestions on clothes and also boots are appreciated.

FALCON - Man you gotta be ready to burst waiting for this trip!
I have a buddy that is headed to Alaska on a sheep hunt this fall too. His outfitter told him to get a pair of boots that do not have stitches. I'm not 100% sure why, I suppose cuz that is a weak spot in the boot though. There is a very good article on the Deltana Outfitters website from a guy whose stitches in his boots gave out and gave him a real problem during his hunt.
I'm still dreaming of sheep hunting.......but I wish you the best of luck and take a lot of pics for us!
GOOD LUCK.

YOU KNOW BRIAN, THERE IS NO SHEEP HUNTIN GEAR LEFT OUT THERE .... I BOUGHT IT ALL. WELL I FEEL LIKE I BOUGHT IT ALL, I'M BROKE. MY OUTFITTER SAID THE GUIDES (ON MY ARRIVAL) WILL SIZE UP ALL OF THE SHEEP HUNTERS AS TO HOW NEW THEIR GEAR IS. THUS FIGURING INEXPERIENCE/WEALTH/TIPS/DETERMINATION/ECT,ECT. I DONT TAKE IT TOO HEART, JUST TALK. BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD TELL MY GUIDE I HAVE 1. A NEW RIFLE/ JUST BOUGHT/ NEEDS TO BE SIGHTED IN
2. A BRAND NEW PAIR OF BOOTS
3. NEVER RODE A HORSE IN MY LIFE.

4. FORGOT TO PACK RAINGEAR/CAN I BARROW YOURS???
OH YEA, I AM ALSO A BIG TIPPER (not). THIS WILL GO OVER LIKE A SKUNK AT A LAWN PARTY. ACTUALLY I HAVE PACK A FEW ITEMS THAT I WILL SHARE WITH MY GUIDE, HE WILL BE A HAPPY GUIDE. TAKE CARE YD.

Dave:

ps How's the sheep counting going at night?

I would go with one of the newer miricle fibers like under armor for your under wear. I have a whitewater windstopper shirt that I would not be without up there seems like the wind never stops blowing. Healy Hansen impertech raingear, most of the guides wear it. I personally like a good wool shirt doesn't seem quite as hot to me as the fleece but is still warm even when wet and you will get wet. Get a pair of good stiff leather boots with real good ankle support you will need it. Good luck with your hunt call and ask your outfitter what he recommends this stuff works for me.
