I'm going bear hunting with my kids next spring. Iv'e talked to several guides that put back up shots in bears once you shoot an hit them. Is this legal? Can another hunter put a backup shot into a bear to prevent it from reaching thick cover? If a bear drops and get back up would it be legal for me to shoot it and my kids to put there tag on it if they put the first shot in it?I couldn't find anything in the regs.

Never said I didn't believe you. So on a archery hunt a rifle backup is illeagl? Iv'e just heard over and over again guides say I carry a 378, 416 etc to put down the hit bear.

if i was you... and i was with my kids... bear hunting... i wouldnt care about the regs... id have a firearm with me at all times incase one attacked me or my kids... id rather take a chance of getting in trouble than chances of getting eaten...

Yes it is legal. The guide has an obligation to protect you. If the bear reaches thick cover and is wounded, you generally will not be the one who goes in after it, and if your guide allows you to go in, he will lead and you will follow. Most guides will let you finish your bear, but if it even looks like the bear will reach thick cover, they will shoot. Before you go on the hunt, establish the ground rules with your guide. Make sure both of you know when and under what circumstances the guide will fire. If you want to get the answer from the horses mouth, go to http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com There are several active outfitters/guides that will give you the law. You can ask for them by name: Michael Strahan, Byron Lamb, and BRWNBR. There are a few others that I cannot recall. Also, the webmaster, David Johnson, is a retired Alaska Wildlife Biologist and can throw his thoughts on the regs. There is also at least one State Trooper, Burton, who can quote the regs as well. If you call F & G, you will most likely get the same answer as the guides listed above will give you. They all can quote chapter and verse for you out of the various regs. If you do post your question there, please put their replies on this forum for the benefit of everyone else.

Good luck,

Thought I recognized one of those names.
