Mulies in Alaska

What have you been smoking? There are only Sitka Blacktail deer in Alaska.
There are Mulies down in B.C., Canada and other Providences in CAN along with the USA.

There have been a few reports of sightings throughout the years, but I don't think any of them have been confirmed. They have mulies in the NWT and the Yukon territory. Might not be that far fetched.

There was an article in the paper this past summer about the occasional sightings along the AK Highway. I believe they had photos to back up the sightings and ADF&G said there were confirmed cases. It sounds like a few will move in and die out every few years. They do have a small population across the border in the Yukon I guess.
Actually there are a few Sitkas that have moved up into Anchorage from PWS. Now that's a bit of a hike too.

Was at the ISE Show in Sacramento today and talked with an Outfitter from Yukon and he told me that there are Muley's north of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory and in the NWT too. They have migrated from BC as the weather has been warming up in that direction. He too said that there have been sightings of them around TOK, Alaska which is just across the border.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-06 AT 01:24PM (MST)[p]I know there is mule deer as far west as Haines Junction in the Yk. There is also Elk up in the Yukon. Ive heard that populations of both species are growing and soon (If not already)they will have a limited draw hunting season.

These photos were taken by a neighbor of mine. Deer was photographed in Chisana (near Tok), Alaska.

how does one tell the difference between a blackie and a muley?
just curious.not trying to ask a dumb question...

There's a couple ways. The size of that deer, the tail and the throat patch (sitkas normally have 2). Here's a picture of a sitka for comparison.
