Any experiences on good or not so good satellite phones to consider? Looking at renting, maybe buying one for our October wilderness hunt.

Thanks for your help!

I've used Mobal and Sat phone store- mostly the latter seems they are a bit cheaper. Sometimes the antenna on the rental phones are crummy- [happened my last 3 rentals] the last 9505 would only work with the antenna folded against the back of the phone- it made better contact.

These outfits get you with all of the extras. SPS overnights the phone to you so no need to get it much in advance of your trip and they give you 3 or 4 days to get the phone back to them as I recall. Most req a minimum minutes plan along with the rental. I get the minimum. Get familiar with it and make the test call. SPS has dialing instructions on the phone since it req's a code to get service.

Most Sat phones get terrible reception and drop a lot of calls but solo its nice to have. I got better service in the Alaska range than in the middle of Nevada- go figure. Probably worth telling them its a life or death situation if you need to use it so they send you a good unit.

Thanks for the feedback. I used the Iridium rented from Mobal. The phone worked great on clear nights/days. Just a small amount of cloud cover and it did not work. Battery life was great. Mobal seems good, although I have not gotten my final bill yet. Thanks again.

Call it what you want, but when we had scattered clouds, we had a crappy connection that was in and out, when we had full cloud cover, not connection - phone would not work. When we had clear skies, phone worked beautifully. Just the way it was for us on this trip.
