LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-11 AT 05:57AM (MST)[p]With all the new brand of hunting clothing that are available today, Kryptek, Sitka, Core 4, APX, UA, etc.., what brad do you feel you get the most for your money and why. Looking to upgrade for next year and was wondering. I personally am a BIG fan of wool clothing but...

I have the same question. I don't mean to hijack the discussion, but I'd like to hear Wade's answer to hiker/climber, northern rockies, early to late season.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-11 AT 05:19PM (MST)[p]Firstlite merino wool for me. Keeps me cool on the hike in, and extremely warm for its weight when I need it. Also wicks away moisture and doesnt stink after days wearing it without washing. Amazing stuff!

Good questions.
Most people can only afford 1 set of the new "High Tech" clothing, so buy per condition and hunt is NOT an option.
Ideally, you would purchase according to the situation, but like I stated that is not an option for most people.
With that said:
I really like the KUIU gear. The pants hold up better than similarly priced Sitka. The Jackets are good, and the Merino Wool shirts are great.
First Lite, makes good stuff for sure. I have some concerns with their pants, but wool is always a good option for almost any condition.
Take a serious look at the new Under Armour stuff, it seems very good, at a decent price.
Good luck, lots of good options out there.

Most for your money;
Walmart wicking shirt $6

Cabelas microtex camo pant $39 on sale

Alpine softshell jacket $45

Cabelas Space Rain $39 original purchase, now its about $59 on sale

REI wool socks $12
Terramar syn boxer $12 excellent[campmoor or campsaver??]

I hunt archery season. My favorite garments are Sitka ascent and REI pant with Schoeller fabric but both are $100 range. I have some ibex merino thats great also.

Is the real expensive stuff 4x better than above- I think not, YMMV

Microtex, best stuff out there, reasonably priced. Wore one pair of those pants for 9 days in AK. Rained/snowed/windy every day. Did not wear rain pants. This stuff wont stay wet!!!!
Also: cabelas MTP base layers, Underarmor boxers, Thorlo socks.
All good stuff!!

Sorry for the late response. For a hiker/climber in difficult and sharp terrain I am liking Arbor Wear Stretch Tech Pants and Wild Things WT Tactical Hard Shell SO 1.0 Jacket and Pants for shell/protective layers in Multicam camo.

Second choice in camo would be Sitka Gear Stormfront top and bottom but only because I have not determined how tough the Kuiu Chugach set is yet. The Kuiu set will move up the ladder depending on how well it proves to stand up to the abuse steep rocky country dishes out.

If I didn't need camo I would use Arcteryx Theta AR Jacket and Alpha Bibs.

Don't buy a hunting brand. Buy a mountaineering brand. All the tech hunting brands are doing is copying the mountaineering brands and then putting camo on it. Try Arcteryx in a neutral color. You dont need camo for rifle hunting. Buy an 800 fill down sweater. It will BLOW your mind how awesome it is.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-02-11 AT 11:09PM (MST)[p]Of course some of the good hunting brands are copying the mountaineering brands, that's what we have been asking them to do for many years and they are doing a pretty good job at it now. If the hunting brands are making a product that is as good as the mountaineering counterparts and they don't cost any more than why not use them. I am a rifle hunter and I prefer camo.

As for the down sweater, I agree with you until it gets wet and then it isn't so awsome.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-11 AT 08:47PM (MST)[p]Does anyone have any experience or info on the Stormkloth2 line of clothes? It is two layers of fleece with a breathable/waterproof membrane sandwiched between the fleece. Guess it can be used as a medium weight outerwear ensemble.
