Dehydrated Backpack Food

Just wondering what others think is the best dehydrated backpack food? I tried The Outdoor Trail at the Expo in Salt Lake and I thought that it tasted alot better than others that I have used in the past. I know I will be using that from now on.

I prefer instant grits, oatmeal, ramen noodles.
I've never had "good" freeze dried backpack food.

Maybe you should take a look at Wise foods. I have recently found them and I feel they are the best tasting of all the freeze dried foods available.

I agree, although I havent eaten much of anything else. The mountain house meals are good and give you plenty of calories for the day.

I am going to try a few of the others listed here as I havent heard of them before. anything to break the sweet and sour pork mountain house spell. The only one I havent cared for is the chicken tetrazini

Can you get single servings with any of this stuff. All the mountain house meals that I see seem to be 2 servings and are huge. I was eating the whole thing on my very phisically demanding moose hunt, but even then it was too much food.

I am talking about the main dinner entre type stuff.

If you are looking for single servings, Go with the mountain house pro-paks. All the same meals but single servings and less bulky.

try MRE to they are not all bad to pack with you i see sportsmans is carrying them now

If your taking out the calories, you'll be able to finish a regular Mountian House meal 2 servings. Especially at high altitudes and all day hiking with little to eat during the day. You'll put that food away fast :)

Yes, those MRE's with the water activated heaters are great. Open up the MRE and take out all the JUNK you dont need, keeping the entree and the heater. Dont need any stoves or fuel and not wasting your drinking water cooking food. The heaters need very little water. Definitely an option.

Mountain House! after a long day in the backcountry eating nothing but granola, jerky and oatmeal that 2 servings just seem to disappear during dinner. at that moment, better then any meal i've had at a fancy restaurant

+1 on the Mountain House never had any trouble downing the meals for 2 after a hard days hunt. We actually calculate it as 1 meals for 2 per person when on a hunt.. When you hunt hard and climb in steep country all day you have no problem downing the meals for 2 pack...Even with that much food everyone in our group still looses at least 10 pounds in 10 days of hunting in the backcountry. I tried the MRE's had a couple fail and had to eat it cold or luke warm. The extra weight of the MRE's per meal was an issue for us. We rather use a water filter and pack the freezed dried and backpack stove and gas. We know were going to have a hot meal :)

buy a dehydrator, a vacuum sealer and spend a little time in the off season and make your own. it ain't rocket science!!

You can also buy Mountain House and a few others in a #10 can, which serves about 8-10, depending on the item. I separate these into serving sizes I like, usually about 1 1/2 of the suggested size, and get just what I need. I just pack zip lock baggies with each meal.

I have to make my own, it takes some time but is worth it. Too much sodium in commercial freeze dried food for us old people.

This^^... I've been dehydrating left overs, you can accumulate a big assortment pretty fast this way... And it's cheap...

Just cook with the FBC method...

I use Mountain House as well for 1/2 of the time. This year on the odd days to switch things up I used a pack of Rommen Noodles mixed with about 1/2 cup of rice.

I have mentioned this before and a previous poster has too.
I take MRE's day pack or multiple day's. You do not have to take the whole packages.
Strip them down to main meals and heater's, it is so much better than freeze dried. You are or should be packing out alot more than you are packing in if you shoot an animal.
Just an opinion.
Thank You
Rick

MRE's are great for overnighters...

But,they are too heavy for multiple nights as they are close to 3x the weight of dehydrated or freeze dried food..

On a 5 day trip that could easily add up to 10 lbs more than dried food...

exactly, they are not light! someone else made a great point on the store bought ones. look at the sodium content. it's insane!!

Just stating what I do.
I do not like the freeze dried stuff except the mountain house cobbler items, I would rather eat elk turds than 99% of the other items.
I have not tried some of the newer products on the market but I am willing to try them and will.
My previous post is just somthing that has worked for me for many years no stove required just the heaters from the MRE pack.
Chili Mac, are my favorite.
Merry Christmas MM
Rick

someone stated in some other thread how they loved the chili mac, but it came out the other end pretty rough....or something to that affect. they said they had a rock near camp called "chili mac rock". ha ha. i would stay clear of that camp and especially that rock!!

LOL... I never had that kind of problem with the MRE's... Total opposite really (think rabbit pellets lol) I figured they did that to everyone and that would explain why they only gave 3 sheets of toilette paper with each meal...

HA the trick is don't chew the gum in the MRE it is laxitive based (don't know this for sure but have been told this by military personal).
And yes there are plenty of rocks and tree's that have dreaded seeing my pasty ass heading thier way.
One item I packed this year was the starkist albacore steaks.
Wow! very good in my opinion but the smell stays around for a long time and seems to stick on everything. I won't go into the old girlfriend thing but I will not pack them agian.
