i am looking to buy a tripod for backpacking i would like it to at least extend high enough to set down and glass. and b as light as possible. anyone have any recomendations of brands or where to find a good one?

do you have a price range? that determines a lot in tripods. right now i make due with a 80$ tripod but someday i really want an outdoorsman tripod and they are 3-400$

I can't afford the Outdoorsmans, I'm sure they are nice.

The Outdoorsmans Lightweight Medium Tripod is 2.4 lbs ($369). I have a Craftsman tripod that only weighs 2.375 lbs (including head) that is less than $30. It is a little big, but really lightweight.

grizzly how tall would you say it extends to? i cant afford 3-400$ i was hopeing like 2 or under.

my tripod is a rocketfish from best buy. i know doesnt sound like much cause its from best buy, but maybe it'll suprise you. its carbon fiber so its lite, its very user friendly and it was only $80! i then put a decent head on it (manfrotto 700rc2 pan head). the only down fall i see is it doesnt extend far enough to stand behind it. its extends to 48". it'll suit my needs til i can get the one off my wish list. good luck!

I have a Janssens Hunt Pod, light weight, extends plenty to sit behind, great fluid head, stable in windy conditions. Use it alot on various hunts, I give it a good review.

I have been wondering the same thing, I think I am going to go with the SLIK Sprint Pro EZ. You can get them for about $100 not very heavy and they go short but also big enough that you can look through it standing up.

Vortex High Country. Decent price, fairly light, broad height adjustment. It is a bit wobbly with legs fully extended, though some weight hung on it helps.

My hunting tripod is the outdoorsman medium and for scouting I use the SLik 624 pro CF, not sure I would try shooting off from the Slik but is is a great lightweight tripod.

I'm with Hezzy, RocketFish from Best Buy. I kept the ball head with hydro pan feature though. weight is 2.8 lbs. I know there are lighter ones out there, but this thing is rated to hold 15lbs. So when the wind is blowing , you can load up a sack of rocks and hang it off the hook and stabilize it well. and for $70

The Outdoorsmans and Manfrottos are a better value in the long run. You only have to buy one of them once.

I have had to have my my Slik 613CF repaired twice and I would be careful about going too light. I find that too wispy is less stable and vibrates in the wind.
