light weight tarp

LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-12 AT 06:43PM (MST)[p]Cabellas has a sil-tarp for reasonable price. I've had one for a few years. XPG.Light and versitle. Take it with my bivy sack if I'm going lite. Kelty makes a real good one but pricier. They come in a few sizes.

10X10 is a weird size if that is what you really are looking for, they are usually 5X8 or 8X10. The good ones are not cheap, I like Integral Designs and you can get the 8X10 sometimes for $80 on ebay. I hear good things about Tarptent also, you might want to give them a look. If you want dollar value get the blue tarps at walmart for $3 but they are bulky and weigh more.

Check out some of the fabic stores(silk) and see what they have in bulk rolls. then just have them put a seam around the edges and spray it with waterproof spray.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-12 AT 09:18AM (MST)[p]I am converting to tyvek myself, but couldn't find smaller sheets locally. Went to Lowes last night, they sell it in 3x100 rolls and 9x120 rolls, quite a bit more than I need. I want a 4x8 sheet to put a the bottom of my pack to double as a clean place to set meat when processing in the field and as an emergency shelter.

Backpacker also reccommended cutting tyvek to the size of your tent to use as a lighter weight footprint - great idea.

There are some commercial ones, but a guy is doing homemade ones on ebay that look legit. I ordered one, it has stick on grommets to use as tie downs.:

I use a piece of silnylon as an emergency shelter on some hunts and sewed the seams myself but sil is tough to work with.

I would just check the discount outfits like Sierra trading post, Campmoor, backpacking light, Campsaver and get a decent one- you will have it forever.

Love the Kelty Tarp. It packs down very light and small, and comes with elastic cord hooks and stakes that make it easy to make a lean to or shelter almost anywhere.

Best of Luck,
Jeff
