Davis tents

Hey all. I've been weighing out my options for next years elk season. We may loose our camper connection,so I'll have to be ready. Thinking wall tent. A search here turned up some reference to Davis tents. I sent them an e-mail to spec me out a tent. What are your thoughts regarding internal frame as opposed to conventional poles? I'm a little concerned with the wind thing also. last year it got VERY windy first elk season. Tried to rip the awning off the camper and shreaded a tarp we had string up around the easy up. Broke the easy up too. We could probably find a more sheltered site if necessary. Although the spot we had last year was beautiful. Back on point. I would appreciate any and all input regarding tent selection and options. Trucking in will allow us to bring a good stove and any other essentials for comfortable living. Thanks much.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-23-12 AT 08:51PM (MST)[p]Excellent tents! Get windows on the sides and back or side windows and double screened doors for ventilation in warmer weather. Get their Colorado door to cover the zippers and to give extra weather protection. Buy their internal frame angles and cut your own poles from 1" EMT. Use poly tarps for a floor (cheap and easy to sweep). If I were doing it again, I'd put the stove-jack in the wall, as it makes it easier to tarp the tent. Not only for rain and snow, but will help protect against burn holes.

For 3-4 guys and gear, get at least a 14x16. Make everyone use a cot because you can store a bunch of stuff underneath. Heat it with a Cylinder Stove.

I own several wall tents most of them davis. I have both types of frames. If you like you can call me and I can give you the good and bad on both set ups. Dave 602/228-1719

LAST EDITED ON Oct-23-12 AT 09:16PM (MST)[p]I should add, I just recently sold that 14x16 Davis to my hunting partner because I picked up a 14x16 Kirkham's/AAA Wall Tent from a buddy for a ridiculous price, but couldn't afford to keep both. I went back and forth as to which one to keep for myself (one of the hardest decisions I've ever made!), but finally decided to keep the Kirkham's/AAA because it's bigger and because they're local. It has pretty much every extra they offer including extended eaves, double screened doors, picture windows in both sides, internal frame with their snow pole kit, factory rain fly, etc.

Both tents are 14x16x5 on paper, but the Kirkham's/AAA is 14x16x5 finished size, where the Davis is 14x16x5 cut size. The Kirkham's is made from 12.5 oz Sunforger/fire retardant canvas. Davis uses 10.1 oz Sunforger canvas (I didn't pay for fire retardant when I bought it). Both have internal frames, with Davis having the better angle brackets, IMO.

Like I said, it was a tough decision, but we both made out like bandits (bought the Kirkham's/AAA for $500.00 and that's what I sold the Davis to my buddy for), and now we both have great tents.

We're going to break in the Kirkham's on the Utah muzzleloader elk hunt next week.
