So I am looking at getting a new pack this summer and wanted to ask you guys your opinion on packs. Ok a little overview of myself, I am 5'7" 215 pounds and I have a pretty short torso. I love to hike the mountains of wyoming. I am looking for a pack that is capable of carrying enough gear that I can stay on the mountain for a few days and is strong enough to haul out a deer plus my camp. I will only be able to spend around 400 on the pack, so the upper end packs won't fit my budget. I was looking at the eberlestock packs but have heard that they don't fit us short guys too good. I was also looking at the new Tenzing 5000 pack because I have also heard that this pack fits the short torso fellas really good but have not heard alot about this pack. So I am in a bit of a pickle. That's why I wanted to hear from you guys on which packs you have used and which ones work well and which ones don't. Thank you for all your help.

If you are not hung up on having a "camo hunting pack" then I would visit a mountaineering store where they can help fit you and should have packs in your price range that will do what you want it to do. If not I would save more money and take a look at the Kuiu Icon system. Ive heard nothing but good and it fits the bill perfectly for what you want. Good luck in your search.

Cabela's, Cabela's, Cabela's.

I took a regular old Cabela's Alaskan Outfitter external frame pack and loaded it up with 50 pounds, walked on the treadmill at the highest incline for 5 hours a week, 4 months in a row. For 2 more months I loaded it with 72 pounds for 5 hours a week.

It'll handle anything YOU can carry and will hold LOTS of shiz.

For the price, you cannot beat the quality and warranty of a Cabela's pack.

I have been using the Horn Hunter Full Curl for 2 years now and it is awesome. I have had it loaded down with as much as my little legs could carry, which was 1/2 of a boned out spike elk. It has a meat shelf that will handle all the weight, and a large waist belt that makes carrying a big load comfortable. It is a modular pack so you can take the big expansion bags off, and just haul the frame if you wish. I don't foresee needing anything else.

I've had a Cabelas Daypack for over 20yrs. now and no signs of dying yet. That thing has been unbelievable.
That said, I also have an Eberlestock that seems very well built.

Eberlestock has an adjustable torso feature behind the back. I'm 5'9" and have tried the Badlands Ox and the Badlands 4500 but find the Eberlestock Dragonfly to fit me best. fatrooster.

I have used my Eberlestock Dragonfly since '06 and love it. It can adjust to fit your torso. I am 5'6" (maybe only 5'5" after the last elk I packed out) and it fits me great. I don't think I even have it adjusted down to the lowest level. I could have bought the Tenzing (5500?) for under $200 new a few months ago, and couldn't justify another pack. Just my .02
