Kuiu, Outdoorsmans, Mystery Ranch?

Alright, I've been looking at the newest packs by these top 3 pack makers. And, going against my belief that we as hunters are getting screwed over on high priced gear.....I'm wondering who has these packs and what are their thoughts?

I have the mystery ranch crew cab now. I like it, but I don't think it's the end all of packs. I've talked on the phone to the outdoorsmans pack guys, of course they believe their pack is the best ever. Problem is, you can only buy it online. No store to go put your hands on it and check it out. The Kuiu seems to be ultra light, don't know much else about it other than it looks like David Long is starting to use it.

So, thoughts? Suggestions? I've been looking at some "non-hunting" packs, and well, here I am, still stuck.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-13 AT 07:41PM (MST)[p]Huntinfool and Eastmans both did hunting pack reviews in recent months, you may be able to find them online.

Throw Kifaru, Stone Glacier, Eberlestock, and Remedy 7 into consideration as well.

PS. I have the KUIU 1850 and 5000 and think they are great (the two bags fit onto the same frame). I use the 1850 over 90% of the time and love it.

Can you tell me more about your Kuiu packs Grizz? Where you got them and maybe the cost?

I'm more interested in the 5000, from what I understand, they compress down nicely. Just wondering if it does everything you need it to do, carry spotting scope, easy access, water bladder, haul meat, blah, blah, blah.

Here is a review somebody else did...

I believe the only difference in the 5000 and 7000 is a little bigger lid space. You can also see Jason, KUIU's owner, do some pretty good reviews on their website, www.KUIU.com, and on youtube.

They only sell direct, so you have to buy from there (or ebay), but you want the 2013 frame and suspension so don't buy a used one and get the older frame and suspension.

It is super lightweight, compresses to the size of a daypack, can expand with the load-sling for extra meat or camping gear capacity. I can't find anything wrong with it. Very well made. If you fork out the dough and buy the 5000 (or the newer 5200), you can add the 1850 pack to it for less than $100.

Thanks Grizz, I'll get ahold of them. I hate forking out big money for stuff, but....ya gotta have good gear.

I am currently using a MR Longbow and just ordered the Kuiu 1850. While I like the Longbow I'm looking at the 1850 for a weight savings of about 2 lbs less. Granted, the Longbow is a bit bigger in size (2400 vs 1850) I'm betting I can use this 1850 to the same extent. We will see this fall.

If you already have a crew cab, I would take a look at the Metcalf. It is way lighter and the frame extension makes a huge difference in the way it carries.

After looking things over I ordered the Outdoorsmans Pack. Should show up in the next day or two. I'll be using it immediately and post up what I think of it.

The price of the Kuiu scared me off.
