Merino Wool

so I picked up a core4element 190 1/4 zip shirt this summer. pretty good deal on camofire, so what the hell. this is my first piece of merino clothing. anyway, I was up around 7800ft on opening morning and that shirt plus my russell primaloft jacket kept me quite warm and dry while hiking. the shirt did have a very slight itch at first, but it seemed to go away. the big problem was the nasty rash right under my chin. I did a little reading and it seems it is almost impossible to be allergic to merino, plus it was nowhere else but below my chin. anyone ever experience that? it wasn't a bad deal on the shirt, but i think i'll go with first lite for my next merino purchase.

I've owned and used firstlite, sitka, kuiu and core4. To me, core4 is the softest and I sold the rest. ymmv

funny you mentioned that. its the first thing I thought. I put it through the wash yesterday hoping that was it. wore it a bit and didn't notice anything...rash wise. I did notice that the slight itch was back. odd? I wonder if working up just a slight sweat made it feel like the itch was gone.

found out a buddy gets some pretty smokin' deals on first lite, so I ordered a few articles from them. hope they show up before my elk hunt starts!

well, the first lite showed up today. guess it helps when their distribution center is only 20 miles away. lol!! anyway, the difference between the first lite and the core4 is night and day...to me anyway. not the slightest hint of an itch with the first lite. first lite seems to stand apart on the quality aspect too. cant wait to put it to use in the field. not saying I wont buy any core4 products again, but it wont be base layers.

+1 on the Moerino wool

I found a 1/4 zip in Mountain Mimicry on sale at camofire.com.(not sure of the brand) I regret not buying 2! No itch, good wicking quality, wide comfort range, and will be my go-too choice as an undershirt when its colder. I like the patteren in the aspens, and will by more items in the feature.

I wish the predator camo was out there in quality wool, or higher end products. I like the Predator Spring Green, Fall Brown, and deception the best. Cabela's offers it only in a coton blend (I hate cotton). I ware Max 1 from time to time, but feel I stick out when in the sunshine. I am a belever in the benifits of wool. I would like a more "packable" option to my King of the Mountain jacket. Also have a Woolmate vest in outfitter camo that gets a lot of use. hard to find perfection.

That's core4

used the first lite on our elk/whitetail hunt. yeah, I wont be buying core4 anymore. the first lite is a far superior product in my opinion. need to save up a bit and get some more!!

Smartwool. 1/2 the price of First Lite and all of the quality. I have never thought I needed camo for my skivvies.

Watch for sales on Sierra Trading Post. Get the sale plus one of the 30% off coupons that they are always emailing out and you have yourself a darn good set of wool for less than 1 piece of First Lite.

i'll check out the smart wool. i'm getting the first lite for a smoking good deal. I wouldn't buy it if I had to pay retail. too rich for my blood.
