Waterproofing question

I have a 'waterproof' coat that is not quite as waterproof as I would like it to be. Does anybody have any suggestions for a good waterproofing agent for hunting gear that doesn't quite meet the mark for waterproofing?

My experience has been using the fabric spray "scotch gard"
works best on garments and even tents. Do not use the scotch gard for furniture. That one has way to much odor after effects, and the garment will lose its beathability..I soaked the garments on a coat hager then leave them outdoors for 24hrs. That's the best method I found back in the day. Now I purchase Gortex or Dry Plus garments through Cabela's...they are worth the extra money...IMO

One time for tents before I did my homework on a coat I tried the spray Thomson Water Seal...Big Mistake. Looses breath ability as well as high odors and fire hazard.

Good luck,

I ride my motorcycle about 25,000 miles a year and do work as a Motoref for professional bike (cycling) races in the US and Canada as well as doing Photo/TV Moto work for NBC Sports and marathons.

I've been more than happy with 303 Products High Tech Fabric Guard with Water Repellent. It goes on great, dries fast and lasts a long time. What minor smell it has goes away when it dries. Water literally beads up and rolls off without plugging the breathability of Gore-Tex type fabrics.

Most importantly it works well enough to withstand riding a motorcycle in the rain all day without letting the wind push it through.

Just a note if you have GoreTex, the micro pores of GoreTex gradually fill with the sweat and oils from your body and it no longer breaths well. You should keep all items GoreTex as clean as possible inside and out. For those I use Nikwax Tech Wash.

Keep the scotch guard far away from your gore-tex or other proprietary membrane clothing. Use Nikwax as needed for cleaning.
