Looking for suggestions on what kind of boots and backbacks people would use on such a hunt? Have a sheep/caribou hunt booked for fall 2014.
Thanks Brian

I went on a Dall hunt this past August in AK. For the hunt I used a Mystery Ranch Metcalf pack and Lowa Tibet GTX boots. No problems with either. Having the right boots were by far the most important thing.

I've come to really love the KUIU Zamberlan Pamir this past year. It's a stiff boot that takes some getting used to, but wow does it perform in the mountains. I'm looking forward taking them to Alaska this year.

I'll be running the 2014 KUIU pack as well.

I've been using my Lowa Tibets for years for dall sheep, mtn goat, and elk....excellent boots for side-hllling it. I've never gotten my feet wet nor had any blisters. Just make sure you have the right size! Everyone's feet are a little different so make sure what ever pair you buy to try them out well in advance of your hunt. I would advise trashing the insoles that come with the boots you buy and get a quality pair of insoles that match your particular feet. I would also advise socks similar to thorlos that have lots of padding in the bottoms and dry super fast.

You will likely be limited in total weight for your air flights and I would advise using a scale to weigh your gear...also pick a pack that doesn't weigh 10 lbs and is 6,500 to 7,000 cu in. capacity. I bought an Arcteryx Bora 90 many years ago that has stood the test of time. I've lost count of how many wild critters I've boned and packed out with it...never a problem! A lot of guys rave about Kifaru and others....but you will pay a handsome dollar for them.

Thanks for the info, what is the lows boots you are using, looked them up they are lot's of different styles?
Thanks Brian

I believe mine are the Lowa Tibets GTX. I really don't like the higher topped ones. They are heavier and a little to stiff for me. If you want to cover lots of country with quieter soles Lowa Renegade GTX are really nice but don't offer the ankle supprt for 45 degree scree slopes.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-22-14 AT 10:00PM (MST)[p]I have a mystery ranch 7500 with the nice frame. this pack is a large pack that holds heavy loads very well. also boots are up to you, I have burnt through a pair of kenetrek mountain extremes and am now on miendl Canada pros. I like a high top boot and both my pairs are uninsulated. the kenetreks seem to have more support but the soles wore out pretty quick, the miendl soles seem to be holding out quite well. one problem I seem to have is the rands come apart on both my boots. the kenetrecks I sent back and they fixed them but it didn't last. I'm not sure how I'm going to overcome this problem. it is minor, they just tend to hold water a bit more instead of beading off. both boots would suit you well, if they fit your feet. I have also heard great things about hanwag, and lowa. go try some on and buy what fits best.
