I'll bet this has been talked about before but I'm having trouble searching the archives.

I do a lot of my outdoor stuff alone and safety is always important to me.

I am thinking about purchasing a satellite phone. I'd like to hear from those that have them. What are the costs? Who has a good product/contract? Have you had any trouble with them? If so what kind? There is a place here in AZ where I can rent them. Is that the best route?

Thanks for your input.

Goggle Sat. Phones for your info. Prices, plans are always changing. Figure $800 plus for a good phone plus $200 per month or plans that are more than $ 1.00'per minute charges from most suppliers.

Sometimes it's just better to rent a Sat. Phone for a week or two when you need one unless you need one quite often.

I bought a used Iridium 9575 last year before heading to AK for a sheep hunt. What I figured out while looking at all the options you are much better off utilizing the pre paid. I bought a 500min 1year sim card. I think it was $750.00 off the top but ou can add years on it for much cheaper if you happen to not use all your minutes

I might be old fashioned, but it was a lot cheaper to get a technician level amateur radio license. That is depending on your state and systems. NM has a linked repeater system (http://nm5ml.com) that I can hit with a 5w portable radio and it will then go all over the state. Local repeaters are in my area too. The test isn't bad, basic electrical no morse code. That's what I throw in my pack when I head out.
