So, for those of you like myself who love backpacking the high country in search of monster muleys, what's your favorite food item to have along? And, what's your favorite dehydrated meal?

I'm always looking for something new and yummy.

Favorite entrees are Mountainhouse Chili Mac and Beef Storganoff, with MH Breakfast Skillet and some wraps the best in am with instant coffee. I like flat bagels with either tuna in individual foil pouches or bagels with the single peanut butter and jam for lunch and don't ignore endurance runner snacks like goo, Cliff shots and Sport Beans.

I get my Mom to chicken fry some
some backstrap from last year and
carry it with me.

Don't have gravy, but it eats good.

I guess you could call me pretty rustic and hardcore when it comes to food on short term backpacking trips. If I'm backpacking only a few days I've found that it's fairly easy not to deal with cooking. My preference is to bring along meals I don't need to cook. That saves me having to pack the additional weight and bulk of a stove, fuel, and clean many dishes! I have never had a fire while hunting to prevent me and my clothes from smelling like smoke. I'd rather be hunting and sleeping rather than cooking and cleaning up! Obviously on prolonged trips it's important to eat well and keep energy levels high but for short trips I've found I can survive well without warm cooked meals. I guess that's a pretty novel idea anymore?

So what are you eating on your trips jims? On my overnight trips I usually just take a sandwich and energy bars, but for multiple days.....????? What are you taking?

Brian,
I did Jims method once on an archery Nevada hunt for three days, and didn't have the energy and was kind of bummed out, especially at dinner time. I ate Spam in foil, tuna in pouches on bagels and cold wraps as well as PBJ, jerky, and those oatmeal bars for breakfast. Caffeine was in the form of Red Bull shots (terrible). Never again...worth the extra 16oz for a Jetboil in my opinion.

For just a couple overnights/day trip I take almonds&dried apricots,Cliff bars,jerky,good cheese&salami,good bread.
I have gone for 3 days on that.I drink lots of water.
But I make up for it with consumption in camp again.... and lack of coffee on those trips is a bummer...

For lightweight, no cooking, I vacuum seal steak strips (jerky) from Costco as well as turkey jerky. The steak is thicker than regular jerky so not quite as tough and can easily last several days without refrigeration per the packaging. They can be rolled in a strip or tortilla or wrap if you also want some carbs to go with the protein. I usually use this for lunches but it could also be used for a dinner but I typically use the Mountain House freeze dried foods like many for dinners.

Dehydrated; instant grits, ramen noodles, oatmeal. Mountain house sucks, I'll eat it once or twice.
Other than that, Peanut butter, cheese and raisin tortillas.

Everybody has different tastes. I personally like MH meals for dinner. For lunches and breakfast I take a small zip lock and put peanut MM's, 1 salmon packet, jerky, starbursts, and a packet of oatmeal, and maybe a few granola type bars, and individual gatoraide packets. This grab bag covers me for breakfast, lunch and snacks. I finish the day out with a MH for dinner. If I'm going for 5 days I take 5 bags.We survived 18 days backpacking in AK on this stuff and we had plenty of energy.
