Light Weight Tents

I just returned from a Wyo elk hunt where I backpacked in a super light spike camp. My preference during the early season is to use the fly off my 4 season tent. It's a bomber-proof fly (being 4 season) that uses the same poles I use for my tent. It weighs less than 2 lbs and has lots of room. I sometimes bring a plastic painters plastic for floor. The good thing about this setup is my tent plus fly works great on trips like Alaska with lots of wind, rain, sleet, and snow but for early season light weight trips just the fly works great!

My tent is an Exped Aries Mesh...which is similar design to the Hilleberg Nallo 2...but cheaper price. If I had the $ I would have bought the Nallo 2!

I just noticed the post above about tarptents...They are also a great way to go! Take a look at the Scarpa.

Really like the Tarptent Notch. For hunting, makes a lot of sense to use the trekking poles on the way up, leave them in the tent, and then use them on the way down. Design also has 2 vestibles, plenty of room for gear.

Just returned from a timberline hunt in CO and tried out a Big Agnus Flycreek UL1 tent with a trail weight of 1 lb 11 oz. All that in a free standing tent. I have owned BA products in the past, and I continue to be impressed.

+1 on the Fly Creek tent. I also have the UL1 and it works great. It does seem like it could be a little fragile but no problems with it so far. Coming in under two pounds you cant go wrong.

I bought a tarptent Double Rainbow this year and it worked great. Best for 1 person as 2 is too tight for me. I did see there is a TT Notch on ebay now in case anyone is interested.

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL3 owner here. I love the extra space(I solo hunt) and the weight is manageable.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-14 AT 02:40PM (MST)[p]Big Agnes vote from me too.
I used one in NWT on a sheep/caribou hunt and came home and promptly bought one.

Durable? Ripping?
I've spent weeks at a time in lightweight tents and never had an issue (with top brand products). One of my tents is over 25 years old and the zipper finally failed so I bought my Big Agnes.

It seems like the first casualty is the zipper but they usually last a decade with a bit of care.

Good luck in your quest.

There appears to be a lot of recommendations for the Agnes tents. One word of advice with the Agnes is if you plan a long term hunt with a couple hunters you the roof design won't provide much headroom and virtually 0 room for gear...cooking, etc. No vestibule room and angled walls with limited room. If you are cooped up in nasty weather you may want to consider a design similar to a Hilleberg 2 or 3. Plenty of room for gear plus hunter. If you hunt alone for short term hunts in nice weather it may not matter.

I just bought a Tarptent Stratospire 2 and after setting it up, it is just what I wanted. I used the TT Double rainbow this past year and it was OK for 1 person but a bit small for 2. The Stratospire has more headroom and width as well as very large vestibules at each door. It is 5 oz. heavier but for the extra room and comfort I'm very satisfied. I haven't tested it in hunting conditions yet but I have no doubts based on other reviews that it will perform as needed (mostly for early season hunting).

After lots of searching and reading I went with the Kifaru super tarp 17ozs. should ship on the 8th of march. the runners up were the Seek Outside LBO 26ozs and a Bearpaw Luna 2 21ozs.

Kuiu has come out with a one man backpacking tent that weighs in at 17.7 ounces. It has mesh netting and will keep the mosquitos and ants out. It also has a sort of vestibule but I'm not sure if it completely closes up. To me it looks like a bivvy sack with head room. I've got one ordered and can't wait to try it out. fatrooster.

If you want a light weight option with a bit of versatility, and some luxury options, you might like the Hyperlite mountain gear line up.

1 and 2 person echo models weigh 7 ounces.

You can have light weight, bug protection, a floor with side walls for water protection.
Use it with the top or if its hot and dry, use just the inner.
