Great backpacking tent

If your looking for a really nice lightweight, 4 seasons backpacking tent, that is just about bulletproof I found it.
Snugpak, Yep I never heard of them till about 4 months ago and have done a bunch of research on them and finally bought the Snugpak Bunker. This tent will do anything from hot summer days and keep bugs out, to take a snow storm on sideways. Snugpak is designed for military special forces, and has been used for decades by them. I really like the fly first design setup which keeps you dry during setup, or allows you to go ultra lightweight in summer through early fall. I bought mine through https://www.coastal-arms.com/. Great tent at what I feel is a heck of a price for what you get. I also searched Snugpak on Utube and there are a bunch of video's showing full setup of them also.

And no I don't sell them or am affiliated with them, I just really like this tent. This is one of the few things I've bought in recent years where I have gotten way more than I paid for.

Good luck to everyone this fall!

I guess if you just wanted to do summer/early fall yea a little if you take the whole thing, but when it's warm you don't have to use the whole tent you use about half the weight as a warmer weather tent. And most of the super lightweight tents out there are just that 3 season at best, or 3-4 times the money for a couple pounds less. This is a 4 season tent. I personally think if you wanted to buy one tent for all backpacking seasons this covers you in any conditions. I'm sure there is something out there for $600 to $1,000 that's lighter, as durable, and 4 seasons, but I never found any thing out there that can be used as many different ways as this one can be, or one that you can break down to use only parts of it to make it as lightweight as most in warm weather, but still use it in winter conditions.

For the $ it looks like a very good tent! I've always liked tents with verticle walls because it gives more useable space. The 2 person tent looks mighty cramped for 2 people and the vestibule doesn't offer a whole lot of space. I have always been a fan of having the option of using the fly alone when hunting early season and saving weight/bulk for packing. It would be interesting to see how well the Snugpack holds up to a week or 2 of rain.

This is somewhat similar to the Hilleberg Nallo design...that is my favorite tent! A Nallo 2 or Nallo 2 GT runs around twice the price but may be worth it. The GT offers an incredible amount of volume and useable space...especially if just hauling the fly. If I had to pick between the 2 I would pick the Nallo. If I was on a budget I wouldn't hesitate to buy the lessor priced Snugpack and give it a try!

The Bunker is actually a 3 person tent, but you'd have to be with "close friends" :) . I think of it more as a 2 plus gear. The Fly first set up is a really cool feature that other manufactures are starting to pick up on. It allows you to only use the fly in ultralight mode or to set up the tent inside the fly when you need a full on tent. The tent then gets set up without ever being exposed to the elements.
Oh, and I hear that guy over at Coastal Arms is one hell of a guy :)

Hilleberg and Exped have been doing this for years but not many have picked up on the idea or been willing to try it out! I mentioned this around 12-15 years ago in several posts and no one seemed too terribly interested. In Alaska I often use the fly mode plus bring along a bivy bag. If it is dry I merely set my sleeping bag on top of the bivy (under the fly). If super wet I'll set up inside the bivy plus fly. It's nearly impossible to stay dry for days and days of wet weather with just a bivy. If 2 guys split the weight of a fly plus their bivies it is super light weight and a good 4 season fly can withstand an incredible amount of rain, snow, and wind. As mentioned earlier there is gobs of room under a Nallo/Nallo GT 2 or 3 fly...for 2 guys plus all their gear.

Hadn't thought of it before, but it seems that it's mostly European companies that are making fly first designs. Snugpak has been doing it for a long time, same with Hilleberg. In the 80's when I worked for REI there was a European company that had a fly first tent and we all thought it was crazy :) . Now, its my preferred style/design.
