I tore my Achilles last year and I'm having some pain in my opposite foot Im working with the doctors on it but I find that a stiffer shoe helps. Need a good stiff boot to get back out in the Mountains what should I buy.

Kenetrek has a boot made for your situation. It has removeable stays that run vertically up the inside and outside of the boot to support your ankles. Great for sidehilling and such. I have a pair and love em. They are called Ever Step on their website.

Yea they are ridiculously expensive but in my case they make the difference of hunting rough country and side hilling or not so I bit the bullet.

Mike try Lowa Tibets.
I have real bad ankles, these boots fit like padded gloves and give incredable support. PaulC wears them too.
Try them on with liners & heavy socks that you might wear besides regular socks. I found 1/2 size up was best for me,and found them online new in box for $200.

I have Lowa Tibets and really like them when I'm on super steep sidehills and need ankle support or hunt in snow. I have strong ankles so prefer boots that are a little shorter, more flexible, and lighter. My favorite boots so far are Scarpa Kailash. Lowa Renegades are great boots that are just a tad lighter than the Kailash.

The worse boots I've tried so far are Kenetrek Mtn Hunters. Their soles are so thick I felt like I was on stilts. I stumbled all over the place on rocky, steep, slopes and it was almost dangerous!

If you want a great deal on boots take a look at Sierra Trading. I got my last Scarpa Kailash there for just over $100. They often have an additional 20 to 30% coupon off their already great prices.

I would seriously consider trashing the insoles that come with your new boots and buy a new set that matches the needs of your particular boots. Another thing to do is buy a pair of padded socks similar to Thorlos. They dry fast and add additional padding to your feet.

Obviously you know a lot more about boots for guys with bad ankles than I do in my limited 30 year experience in sheep hunting and mountain hunting in general. Kenetreks do have a higher platform that other boots. I have worn most boots over the years, certainly not all. I have worn and do wear some Lowa Sheep Hunters and have used ankle wraps with them and their platform is lower to the ground. What I'm saying is that the Kenetrek with the ankle stays has the best ankle support of any boot I have ever used. They are expensive and won't work for everybody. I know a lot of guys who will only wear Lowas and I know lots of guys that will only wear Kenetreks and everything in between. I cannot categorically say which boot is best overall. I only know what has worked for me in my limited experience as my ankle strength has gotten worse over the years.

I can't say I have 30 years of sheep/goat experience but I spend every day at work with boots on. I also spend a great deal of time year round hiking fairly steep terrain. What works for me obviously doesn't work for everyone..especially for those with bad ankles.

Sheephunter, have you ever tried the solid plastic boots some Alaska guys wear sheep/goat hunting? I guess some guys swear by them?

Yes I have worn Koflach mountaineering boots in the Wrangells a couple times with Paul Claus, Bernard Glacier. They work very well in ice, mud, and shale. I really like the ankle support of the new Kenetreks with the ankle stays for us Invalids who don't have enough sense to stop hanging out in the mountains.
