Yeti Coolers

Being the gear junky I am I always look for the best of everything. but I'm having a hard time justifying a Yeti cooler.

Are these things worth the money? I cannot imagine they're worth what they cost . am I missing something or am I right?

I used my $69 Coleman for a week last year and lived thru it. I don't recall wishing I had an $800 one instead.

I have used a Yeti for last couple of years with no complaints. There are differences but it is just like other quality gear......buy the best you can afford.

I think I'm going to have to get one. I never gave coolers a thought until I found out there was an expensive one the cool kids have.

Cabelas has the same cooler for $100 less.We just buy some dry ice and stick it in the cooler with the perishables.

I'd be worried about somebody stealing it out of the back of my truck. I bought one of those big big white ones from costco ten years ago, but had to replace the cheap snaps.

You might check out the one made by Pelican, too. I've got a 65 and just bought a 35 for fishing. They hold ice pretty good but my only complaint is they're pretty heavy! Still cheaper than Yeti. Friends have the ones made by Rtic and love them, but I was leery about ordering one because of complaints about shipping delays....in some cases months after paying for one!

Where do you live.

If you're in TX there are KODI coolers at HEB which appear pretty similar and are significantly cheaper. You may be able to to order one online if you do want to go that route.

Heard good things about Grizzly and Pelican but they're all pretty similar priced I think?

I've used my Coleman Extremes right along side my friends Yeti and my cooler hold ice just as long. We both used frozen 1 gallon jugs. I get 7-9 days depending on the outside temperatures at the time. I have 3 for less than the price he paid for one.

Pretty much what I found to be true:

I have a good sized Coleman and an old sleeping bag. I wrap the cooler in the bag while traveling or when not in use. I guess it works okay. I don't lose much sleep over it.

I did quite a bit of research and picked up the pelican 65qt. You can get the white one on amazon for 270. It is actually 72qt and the same size as the yeti 75qt which costs 450. Everything I researched says the Pelican holds ice as long if not longer than Yetis. Im satisfied with the purchase, it is heavy however.

Be sure and check Craigslist. I got a 250 Yeti that literally had been used twice by a church for $300 less than new. The kids kept asking who was in the coffin, so they sold it.

You should also check into RTIC. They seem to be an equivalent cooler for around 1/2 the price. I would wait until they get production under control though. Paying full price for one and waiting 3-5 months until they ship is not for me.

I have pelican cooler, and we just started buying them for work they hold ice all day in 90+ heat on the right of way for us

Hi Togwotee

I finally broke down and bought a Yeti last year. I like it! Best cooler I have ever had, and it's a Yeti!:)

Like Deerlove mentione however, I doe sorry about it getting stolen out of the back of the truck and or from camp. But until some lowlife steals it, I am enjoying my Yeti:)

LAST EDITED ON Jun-06-16 AT 07:40PM (MST)[p]I have a Yeti and grizzly cooler. Yeti holds ice longer. There are several side by side comparisons if you search. My next purchase will be a Yeti soft sided (hopper) for the drift boat.

I've used the Grizz for a couple years about 150qt works great....down side all quality brands are heavy and get heavier when full....if in the back of a truck or outside chain or cable lock it to something.....we hunt a lot in bear country....bear lock is a nice feature.....

I got tired of replacing latches, dealing with rain water getting inside, and worrying about keeping ice. Cried once, bought a Yeti 75, and glad it's done. I'd take a look at the Cabala's version now. The thing has a pressure relief since they do tend to vacuum seal. Something to consider.

Hey dude?

You Coolin the CROWN or not?

You shoulda Figured out a way for Obama to Buy you one!

I have several of the Coleman Extremes and they do an excellent job. I just wish they made a much larger model.

Maybe they do and I'm just missing it. They hold ice as long as I need them to and block ice much longer than that.

In that test the Yeti didn't do any better than the 40.00 Coleman.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-09-16 AT 10:39AM (MST)[p]First, I have a Yeti, and I love it, and for those of us who want the best, and it doesn't break the bank, buy a Yeti (or clone) and you will be VERY satisfied.

Second, just got an RTIC 65 because my 50 is great for a weekend trip, but just need a bigger one for some trips. Paid $199 (Yeti, is $399) and so far it looks like it will stand up to the Yeti, but time will tell. The BIG downside on them: had to pay for it is July, and didn't get it until September, but it was pretty close to their projected delivery date.

Third, the "tests" they run are bogus on how a Yeti works. When you have a really good piece of insulation and let it get to 90 degrees, it will take a while to get it cold, but when it gets there, it will hold the cold longer. With coleman coolers the insulation gets cold faster. SO, when you put ice in a coleman and a yeti that are both 90 degrees, the Yeti will "burn" more ice getting the insulation cold, BUT will then hold ice longer.

Here is the better test. Take 2 coolers and get them cold, then fill them with ice and see which one holds ice longer. I don't know of a test out there that does that. If you do, give us the link. The day before I leave on a trip, I place the cooler in my house (72 degrees) and place 1-2 gallon ziplocks with ice from my icemaker in it. Then, when I leave, the insulation is "primed" for cold, and will keep ice better than cheaper coolers.

Here is another example of what I mean. I built a house that has solid extruded foam insulation in the walls. My electric bill for a 3000 sq ft house runs $150/month, about half to 2/3 of what comparable houses with standard insulation run. However, when we leave on vacation we turn the thermostat up to 80. When we get home it takes 2-3 days for the AC to catch up and really get the house cool again. Why? because the walls insulation were 80 degrees by then and it takes several days to get them back "primed" to keep us cool again, but from that point on..........

So if you need a cooler for a weekend, the coleman will do the job well, but you will be replacing latches, hinges, etc every few years. However, if you need one for a week long hunt, I will take the Yeti every day of the week, and twice on Sundays!
