Big Agnes bags

I'm looking at the Lost Ranger vs the Mystic SL. They are both 15 deg bags. The LR has 650 fill and the Mystic has 800 fill. The Mystic is 5 oz lighter. The difference in cost is substantial though. The Mystic is $200 more. The weight savings isn't worth it IMO, but is the extra fill worth it? I'm assuming that this will make it closer to the true temp rating. I'm a cold sleeper so I do want it close to the actual rating. Is the Mystic worth the extra dough?

I'm really only interested in BA bags so don't bother suggesting others. I get claustrophobic and don't do well in a small mummy. I love the BA line for roominess.

I have the lost ranger and although I like the room it is not a true 15 deg bag, probably closer to 25 or so, I don't have any experience with the mystic but I have heard good things about it. One other thing don't discount other brands for roominess Big agnes doesn't have a monopoly on large bags, Montbell for one has a strech series that I like and I'm 5'11 and 210 and don't do well in small bags either.

thanks. I should have also mentioned that I am a big fan of the BA pad system. I already own and IAC model. Another reason why I stated it was the BA line I was interested in.

I have the Mystic and the Farwell. I love both. I use the dual-core insulated or 0-degree and it is the most comftorble night sleep to be had away from your bed! It is close to temp rating as I described.

Good info as i am looking in to the same bags. My question is this: Will my thermarest pad (XL) fit into the pad compartment of the BA bags?

Yes, the 20"X72" fits in the Lost Ranger. The BA pad is much thicker, though. I'm a side sleeper, and it works much better for me.

Hey Nate...I had the Lost Ranger and sold it. Great bag but as earlier stated...its definitely more like a 25F bag.

I also have a lost ranger. Very comfy but cold. The anwser is a silk bag liner. I use a cacoon. I think it's 6 or 7 oz in weight but adds 10+ degrees to the warth!!!

Nate:

I have several bags from Big Agnes........but my favorite for high country backpacking trips is by far the Pomer Hoit 0 degree bag. If comes with 800 fill goose down, and weighs about 2.8 pounds (pack weight). You won't get cold in this bag.....even when that unexpected snow storm comes in amkes the high country white. It will cost you (just over $400.00) but it's money well spent, IMO.

LAST EDITED ON May-04-09 AT 01:40PM (MST)[p]thnaks Roy. The Mystic model I am interested in actually has similar specs (also 800 fill down) as the Pomer Hoit, but it's a semi-mummy shape which I prefer. I ain't as skinny as you!

I don't have one of their bags but I have stood on top of Lost Ranger Peak, Big Agnes Mountain, and Farwell mountain.

love the Zirkels,

Bean

I had the Lost Ranger and liked it, but got a cold a few times and it has too much room by the feet. I got a zirkel now, a little lighter and a little smaller, but not as small as a true mummy. I'm 5'9 195 and I think the zirkel will fit me well. Also takes the smaller mummy pad so combined I'm saving about a pound.

I know you said not to suggest other bags but I can't read.
If you are not backpacking look at Wiggy's Hunter Ultima Thule. I'm 6'4" and weigh 240 and I have plenty of room in mine. You will not get cold in this one, I've woke up sweating with ice on the outside of my bag. I've had dozens of bags over the years both down and synthetic. This is the best I've had.

No other suggestions.....thats too bad

Those Montbell Super stretch bags are the BEST for us big guys or anyone who hates being squeezed into a mummy bag

Question: the reg to long seems to change right around 6', im 6' on the nose should I get a reg or long?

I have the BA Encampment 15 deg bag with the air core pad. My feet get cold almost no matter what bag I have. (also have a zero deg. REI bag). I tend to move a lot and can't stand the mummies either. My main problem is cold feet and I've found that if I wear down booties (LLBean?) my problem is solved. So the 15 deg bag seems realistic to me if I keep my feet warm separately!

FYI, REI has a good sale on Big Agnes until labor day. Just picked up the HOIT for $366. The Mystic is going for $306.

At 6'2" and 260lbs, I have the Hog Park 20'degree.
Plenty big, but 20 deg. is kinda pushing it. Usually
end up wearing polypro bottoms and sometimes a beanie.
Great bag though. I would buy another BA.

wife and I have the encampments and had to use the emergency wool blankets to stay warm at 40 terrible performance for a 15 degree bag. We will be returning them to REI

Not sure if you still checking on this, but as others have said this bag is not a true 15 degree bag. I took it to Moab and froze in the 20's. I really like the idea of a Big Agnes bag, but was disappointed with its performance. I have heard of people lining the sides with their jackets to warm up some. If it were me I would get their zero degree bag.

After using my 15 deg bag in a variety of temps, it is definately not a 15 deg. bag and more like 30-35. I just wear my underarmour in it if it's going to be freezing or below. I like the system with the air core pad but the rating is not very accurate.
