I have a lot of experience hunting in Utah, especially for deer. I see the monster bulls, know where they live but never draw. So my offer is for deer. I hunt deer either private property with a muzzleloader or Rifle combining private and public property. I normally hunt with 1 to 2 people. This past year my brother and myself hunted the muzzle and saw 15 bucks with 23-28 inch spreads during the hunt. In the past 5 years of scouting and hunting in this area we have only seen 2 bucks that would near the magic 30 inches, both in preseason scouting.
The rifle hunt is very rugged, however a buck in the 30 inch range is spotted and usually missed or the stalk is messed up once a year. We see far fewer deer on the rifle hunt, but the potential for a real trophy is in this hunt. We will be hunting rifle this year. The area we rifle hunt would require you to hunt the whole season (due to remote access) arriving thursday night before the hunt. We would take horses into the base camp and the hunt ranges from 8000 to 12000 feet, aspen pine and sage bowls. It requires you to be in extremely good shape, let me stress this. We rarely see another hunter. In 8 years of hunting this area we have had 1 truly bad year. We pass up quite a few bucks and would prefer that smaller 4X4's not be harvested. Like any hunt I can't guarantee anything. There is one outfitter who hunts this area and they charge over $7000. The hunters we usually run into are guides or people who work for them. Anyway I am interested in either a chance at a true trophy mule deer or reasonably sized bull elk. Let me know if youre interested. Unfortunately, the draw is over in Utah for the year and so 06 will have to be the year unless there are tags that are not drawn, as a non-resident this could be a possibility. If 06 is the year you want to shoot for I'll hunt either muzzle or rifle.
