Recommendation for a rifle scope for high country deer hunt

I think I am going to buy a new scope for this upcoming high country deer hunt I should draw for this year. Any recommendations?

LEUPOLD OR REDFIELD

Welllll... How about some info. Rifle? Cartridge? Ranges expected? To start with anyway. mtmuley

I think I'll be shooting my 280 model 700. In some of these eastern states where I have hunted whitetail a 400 yd shot has not been out of the question.

I'd probably go with a 3-9, 3.5-10 or even a 4-12. For the money, I happen to think the Leupold VX-2 scopes are a Hell of a deal. Some models are available with the CDS now also. mtmuley

A lot depends on your budget. How much are you looking to spend?

I'd probably like to keep it under 500

+1 on the Leupold VX-2 we just put one on our Grandson's new Tikka T3. We have 4 of those VX-2's in 4X12 on our magnums and the 3X9X50mm on the Tikka rifle. Never had an issue with any of them and hunted in the most adverse conditions possible.. Those Leupolds gather a tremendous amount of light in low light conditions and the optics are crystal clear. One opening morning several years ago we had been watching a group of deer and a nice buck as day light was breaking about 300 yds accross a canyon. Some hunters(public land) saw us and came over and asked what we were watching looking ready to shoot since the shooter was prone position and rifle with tripod was set up about ready to pop a cap in that mulie...We whispered to the hunter regarding the group of deer we had been watching for 10 minutes through the VX-2. The hunter using a Bushnell or equiv. don't exactly remember the brand scope he had... replied when we look though our scopes right now all we still see is black/dark...That's the difference between a top quality scope and the lessor quality scope and yes you can get one for your price range. I suggest the LEUOPLD 3X9 50mm as they gather more light and greater field of view than the 40mm....NOTE THAT WITH THE 50MM RECTICLE YOU MOST LIKELY WILL NEED TO PURCHASE THE HIGH BASE SCOPE MOUNTS.

I've always been a leupold fan myself, great scopes for the money. But......I won one of the new Steiner predator extreme riflescopes a few months back and was blown away with this scope! Far better glass than anything else in their price range, the scope tracks like a dream and I will be replacing every leupold I own. Cameraland has great prices on their demo models.
