Im currently shopping for new tripod/head. Looking for something to handle 85 spotter and also packable. Have had lots of recomendations for outdoorsmans but it is out of budget. Been looking at promaster, slik, vortex summit. Any recomendations?

On heads, im looking for fluid or pan head, not interested in ball or pistol grip. Looking for info on all decent heads.

I bought the Promaster T525P tripod with the Manfrotto 327RC2 head. I use it on my Swaro 80 HD. The tripod and head are so good, they almost outshine the scope. Rock solid and no sag when you release the joystick.

Can't recommend this tripod/head setup enough.

Vortex Skyline... I've had the Outdoorsmans (great but expensive) and Manfrotto tripods. I love my skyline. Tall height, fluid head, super sturdy.

Located in Utah county, Utah. Anyone have any experience with promaster 423? Its 2lbs 8oz, 19" when compacted, 57" max height. Looks like it might fit the bill.

Go to The Imaging Depot (the old Inkley's stores). They stock Promaster so you can try them out.

Get on cameraland, they have the promaster 423 for $99 right now, I love mine!!! I can't remember which manfrotto head I put on it, but it was another $80. Rock solid, extremely light weight set up!

I just call em as I see em!

I am about to set myself up with a new tripod and head as well. Going with the SLIK 634 CF (2.05 lbs, FULL standing height, 18" folded) and the Vanguard PH-111v pan head (12 oz). I have done quite a bit of research and this is definitely the best weigh-price-functionality combo I have come up with. If you want to ask questions about or purchase these items, I suggest contacting S&S Archery in Idaho.

another vote for the Promaster T525P tripod. I have a Jim White head on it. Light, compact, folds short, handles a heavy spotter, has a weight hook, and is quieter than an Outdoorsman, because it is carbon, and not one metal pole inside another metal pole.

I have a Swaro 80mm and use the Slick Mini with the Outdoorsman pan head. I love this combination and it packs light! Great little combo and the tripod won't break the bank, the pan head might though :)

I ordered a promaster t525 tripod. Still deciding on head. Think I have narrowed it down to Manfrotto or vanguard ph11. Jim white or outdoorsmans are a little to pricy for now.

Just ordered the same head from S&S. Need to decide on legs. Did you get the Vanguard yet and if so you like it?

TRDHUNTER,
on the Vanguard ph 111 do you have sag when you release the joystick? I really like the sounds of the manfotto head that Grizzly mentioned with no sag but I'm interested in the vanguard also. Sag is a big problem when digiscoping. fatrooster.

Fatrooster- I have not had any problems with the head moving at all after moving scope. I had this problem a lot with my last setup and this head is leaps and bounds over last setup.

gdog- I am surprised to hear that as I e-mailed steve and received a reply pretty quick and when I ordered I received a confirmation e mail and shipping e-mail pretty quick also. Maybe try again.

Finally connected with him and its suppose to be on its way. Guess I caught him at a time when he was going in 5 different directions. I'll post up when I get a chance to check it all out.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-08-13 AT 09:56AM (MST)[p]Received the Vanguard head and have messed with it a little. Nice movement and overall happy with the product. My issue is the balance of my scope on the head. Put a camera on to take pics and/or digiscope and its really back end (eye piece) heavy. You have to tighten up the pan head pretty firm to keep it from tilting back.

I need to find a balance rail to fit the the scope which will allow me to mount the head plate back further so it balances better. Anyone have something like this already?

Yes and no....

The Swaro scopes foot in my opinion is too far forward. It needs to be mounted a touch further back to help balance the scope....and especially if your mounting any kind of camera.

I really like the Vanguard head. The issue you get is using a really light head and really light legs, but still expecting a really smooth pan head with no sag and little tension needed to be applied. That head on my big Gitzo $$ legs, you can tighten the head up more since there's plenty of weight and support in the legs...if that makes sense.

I'm happy with the head. Not sure how you'd get a smoother head with such a light setup and still not have any sag with minimal tension(?) Tighten it up a little and there's no issue, but its a bit firmer to move around.

Fatrooster...I'm in Sandy...and if you want to come check the setup out...let me know.

gdog, I'm in Elko, Nevada but the next time I'm in Utah I just might do that. Thanks for the invite. fatrooster.
