Razor 65 HD or Televid APO 62

I can get either of these for roughly the same price. The Televid is a show sample in mint condition but is the older 62mm version. Razor would be brand new.

Vortex definitely has the edge in the warranty department. As far as the glass goes, I would appreciate any feedback or opinions on what I should go with.

Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Jun-26-13 AT 07:49AM (MST)[p]Your right on the warranty, but the Leica is a better optic. The Leica will retain its value for years to come. Whereas the Vortex will loose value much quicker. You will loose more in value on the Vortex in first 18 months than it would cost you to have the Leica rebuilt, if necessary.

Thanks, kind of thinking the same thing. I have always loved European glass and I seem to get a similar answer from everyone.

I spent last weekend scouting scouting with my good friend who recently picked up the Razor HD 65. I was extremely impressed with both the optical and structural quality of the Vortex. The fine focus is a huge benefit. I have owned the Kowa Prominar ED 66mm, and used the Swaro 65 non-HD extensively. Of the three, I would put the Vortex HD at the top optically. I have no experience with the Leica, so I can't draw any comparison conclusions there. Either way, it sounds like you are about to have an excellent scope! Good luck.

The vortex razor spotter has very good daytime resolution but surprisingly poor twilight performance. The first scope I bought had bubbles in the eyepiece. The second had a broken eyepiece lock. The quality is definitely not on-par with any of the premium brands but the customer service I received when dealing with my two defective scopes was great. I have a hard time believing the 65 razor outperformed a swaro 65 let alone the idea of standing up against a televid 65... I would buy a used kowa, swaro or leica before I ever throw money towards another new vortex.

Go with Leica. They have a new warranty structure and are much better to work with than in the past.

Vortex is a great value, but not great glass when compared to the Big 3.

If Vortex was as good as the Big 3, they would charge as much. They aren't some charitable organization out to help the little guy.

It looks like you are in the same situation that I was in a few months ago. Its a stressful decision to make.

I seriously considered the Fieldscope ED as well, as there were great prices on them. After reading everything I could about all the different scopes, (Google some searches on the birding forums, they have the best optics reviews), I finally decided that the best glass I could buy was either the Kowa 77 or 88 series or the Swarovski HD series. These were out of my price-range, so I searched for months looking for a deal. My plan was to buy an ATS 65HD, but once I saw the weight difference in a 65 ATS HD and a 80 ATM HD was only 6 ounces (55.6oz vs 49.6oz) I decided to go big or go home.

You will often hear people say they don't want to haul an 80mm scope because of the weight, but 6 ounces isn't much weight to increase your objective lens area by 34% (that is the difference in 65mm vs 80mm). I've never regretted it.

I found a Demo unit on CameraLand and combined it with the 25x50W lens and now can go in the field confident that I have the best glass available. Some day it may make the difference in me killing a monster buck or not. I already feel I got my moneys worth on one bear hunt. Buy once and cry once. That's my advice.
