I love my Zen Ray 20-60x82 spotter, but its so big and bulky it seemed like I never ended up packing it. So I have purchased a smaller unit - Vortex Viper HD 15-45X65 and am looking at lightweight, full size tripod options.

Any recommendations without breaking the bank. I want a good one, but need to stay on a reasonable budget. Lighter the better as it will be going with me in 7-9000 ft country.

My step father is in the same boat as you and just ordered the Vortex summit ss tripod. Seemed to be the best all around for the $130 price tag. Few other came close, but they don't extend as high and weigh in at under 2 lbs.

I'll second the summit ss tripod. I use it with my 65mm viper and it seems to work well. Really versatile as far as range of adjustment on height. Packs down small and is lightweight, yet it's still sturdy.

The vortex set up is ok and I liked mine so so. I just put together a promaster carbon fiber tripod with a vanguard ph 111 head for under $170. What an amazing difference over my vortex summit! Rock steady and just over 3 pounds with my vino adapter included. Shop around a bit and do some research and you can find some great deals on the web!

I just call em as I see em!
