400 bucks

Hey guys, So I've built up a bunch of points on my Cabela's card and was thinking about buying a spotting scope. I don't currently own one. I'd like one that wasn't too heavy to carry hunting all day, but still big enough to do some good glassing.

My budget is around 400, is it possible to get a good spotting scope in this range?

What brands/models do you guys recommend?

Thanks for any input.

For one go to scope, I would also keep saving. I do own a Bushnell Elite 15-45x which I use for backpacking. Light and fits easy in a BP, but eventually you will want more if you hunt big country out west.

Yes it is best to buy quality . But you need something to use now. If you spot a animal with your bino's and need to check antler size before making a five mile hike. I would make due with a Vortex Diamond back 20-60 x 60 399.99 20-60 x 80 499.99 or the viper 20- 60 x 80 499.99 down from 749.99 . These are all prices from Camera land but most seem to follow there pricing.

Thanks for all the tips and advice guys. I appreciate it. Still not quite sure what I want to do, but your advice helps a lot.

If you can, save more, as you will be much happier but if you must I would suggest taking a look at the Leupold 15-30?50 Gold ring spotter. Not the highest magnification out there but does a good job and is in your price range with nice glass and a killer warranty. Might be worth a look see.

+1 for the Vortex Diamondback. It is a good, lightweight scope for the money, and you can't beat the warranty. It isn't the clearest scope when you get up past about 45x, but if you have it mounted on a good tripod on a day that doesn't have too much mirage, you can sufficiently judge deer and elk antlers several miles away. You aren't going to take any awesome pictures through it, but it works very well for $400.

I am in the same position looking for a new spotting scope. I don't want one that is real heavy and was looking at the scopes mentioned above and also the Nikon Prostaff 5. Does anyone have any experience with the Nikon Prostaff 5? I know it is a little more money but may be worth it. Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Nov-12-13 AT 10:51PM (MST)[p]I know you said Cabelas bucks so this is probably out, but Cameraland has the non-HD 65mm Viper for $299 and the angled for $349. Probably the best deal out there right now. It might have been Eagle Optic's that had the angled for $349, I don't recall for sure.
