Have been out of touch ast couple of years with kids college and such.Anyway I seen the Nikon Monarchs binos come in a model 3,5 & 7.And priced accordingly.Has anyone tried any of these and how do you like them.I have to set my limit on $500 max for a pr.Also looking at steiner predator at cabelas for $399.What are any thoughts on these ?Looking for probably 10x42.

In the 500.00 range, the monarch 7's are about as good as it gets. The next step up is to find some euro's in the bargain cave for 600.00.

Minox Demo's are another option if you can find them, very good glass for the money. (better than the other 2 listed)

The Monarch 5's got a great review in the recent Eastmans. Lowest price for ED galss I've seen. I have the old school Monarchs and love them and wouldn't heistate going with Nikon again. Their warranty has been good to me too. If you've been out of touch for a few years, best take a look at Vortex too.

I have the older Monarch 10x42's. They have worked well for me. Mine are at the factory to be cleaned and replace a cracked eye cup. I just bought the Monarch 7's as an upgrade.

I'm anxious to see how the ED glass compares.

Go with the Monarch 7s and you won't be disappointed. Very, very good glass with excellent lens coatings for superior clarity. Nikon now offers a lifetime warranty...

Sandhill - I recently had the same cracked eyecup problem and sent them in and they did a great job! Came back totally clean and feeling like they were brand new so me customer service experience was top notch!

I've had great customer service from Nikon. The Monarchs ATBs I had before the Monarch 7's were sent to me brand new from Nikon when I sent an older pair of 10x42s I bought off Ebay in for a cracked lens. I didn't ask for new binos, but they sent them anyway. So, I buy Nikon whenever I can.

Monarch 7 has very good resolution and brightness. The only issue is the chromatic aberration control needs more work. The Vortex Razor and Zen-Ray ED3 are better in that department.

"The only issue is the chromatic aberration control needs more work."

Well, seeing as how I have no idea what that is, I'm not too worried about it! Nothing a little 30 weight oil- preferably Quaker State- and some ball bearings won't fix.

Seriously though- I started out with some $89 Nikon Travelites and have gradually been working my way up in glass. One of these days I'll spring for some really good glass, but these are light years ahead of anything I've used before.
