"Parallax or not"

I'm going to be buying a scope to mount on my 300 wsm and I can't decide between the 3x9x40 and the 4x12x40, what would be the best and why? Also, the scope I'm looking at has the option of AO parallax or fixed parallax, which parallax would you go with? This is the gun I use for all my big game hunting.

Thanks,

How far do you anticipate shooting with the gun?

The farthest I would shoot is 500 Yards with this gun.

Depends on your hunting style. If you think you might regularly be taking shots in 400-500 yd range, then having the 4-12x with parallax adjustment might improve your accuracy. If, on the other hand, you're more likely to be taking quicker offhand or "heat-of-the-moment" shots at 100 yds, I'd go with the 3-9x.
