I have some Cabelas points or dollars that I want to use up for a new scope on my Ruger 270. I want a new scope to accommodate my older eyes and something for longer ranges (300 to 400 yards). I am also stuck with purchasing what Cabelas offers to use my points.

I have narrowed it down to the following 3 Leupold scopes:

4.5-14 50mm VX31 CDS w/ 1 inch tube for $600 duplex retical
4.5-14 50mm VX31 CDS w/ 1 30 mm tube for $700 duplex retical

4-12 x 50mm VXR CDS w/ 30mm tune for $800 fire dot retical

Is the 30mm tube $100 better than a 1 inch tube on the VX3i?

Does anyone have experience with the fire dot retical?

Does anyone know if the advertised "Twilight Max" coatings on the two VX3i models is on the VXR?

Is the "Twilight Max" coating superior to what is on the XVR, or just advertising mumble jumbo?

The 30mm tube allows for more moa adjustment but if your limiting to 400 yards the 1" tube is more than enough.

I got the vx-3i 4.5-14x40 back in February for a new rifle. So far I like it. Haven't gotten to test it too much, just 100yds

Last year that scope was on sale at cabelas for $375.00 I'm waiting for it to go on sale this year. The leupold.

I went with the 3.5-10 VX-3i CDS and am very pleased.

I also mounted it on my 270; a Win Model 70. The 40mm objective lense and 1" tube seems about perfect for that rifle.
