I need to replace an old Campmor down sleeping bag that I have had for 25 years. I hate mummy bags. I am looking at a list of four that retail for around $ 300. I need a bag that is good to 15 degrees above and it can't be a mummy bag. I need a long bag. It has to compact well for backpack hunting. I hope to use it a lot if I draw my Wyoming sheep tag in 2016.

I don't do well with mummy bags either and last year I bought a Hammock Gear quilt and I absolutely love it. They are extremely light weight with 850 down so extremely efficient. I was a bit reluctant to try a quilt so I used my down mummy unzipped on a few trips and decided to do it and I'm glad I did. I ordered their 20 degree bag and added 2 more oz. of down to bring it around 15 degrees. I was very comfortable in it last year with the coldest night being 24 degrees and I was very warm so I think their ratings are a comfort rating rather than a survival rating.

COLOelkman,

How do they compress? Do you get a compression sack with them? Would you go with the snaps or a sewn lower section?I checked their website out and I like what I see.

Thanks mh

They come with a stuff sack which compresses somewhat. For backpacking I compress mine more via velcro straps from Home Depot or similar so it's as small as possible. If you have plenty of room it's not necessary. I get cold feet fairly easily so I got the sewn it foot box. I may have been OK with just the snaps but I wanted that part as warm as possible. I usually wear heavy socks to and so far my feet have been fine. I did compare a few other quilts and thought the HG's were a little more bang for the buck. I also liked that you could customize it by adding more down to the standard models. fyi, I also got the extra long even though I'm 5-11 as it's nice to be able to pull it over my head at night. A friend who's a bit taller ordered a regular and said he wished he got the x-long so that's what I did as the extra weight is minimal considering this is used every nite. I also wear a stocking hat. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the information. It looks like the way to go. I hope to go sheep hunting this year and would love to have this for overnight stays.
