LAST EDITED ON May-10-18 AT 07:17PM (MST)[p]Questin: My wife has been bying alot of those delivered meals where all the ingrediants are supplied and you just prep and cook. These meals come with nice gel ice packets. I've been throwing them in my ice chest in the basement. I'm wondering if they will last longer in my coolers during hunting/scouting trips than self made block ice?

Anyone have any experience with this? I'd hate to count on the gel ice and find out it sucks.

Thanks

I think it's equivilant to the homemade blocks. Just no melting water. If you use milk jugs freeze when they melt you have extra clean usable camp water.

I gave the gel ice packages a test with additional ice in two coolers on a 4-day scouting trip. My personal opinion is these gel packs are good for pre cooling the coolers but did not last long enough during the trip. I'll continue to use self made ice blocks in the future

I don't really like the gel packs. They don't seem to last and they can get slimy. Home made ice blocks can double as a water supply, and a cold one at that. Nothing like a slug of ice cold water once off the mountain.
