Anybody use the Wilderness Athlete Energy Bars and Hydrate and Recover Drink mix? Is it worth what you pay for it? Im willing pay if it works just wondering if anybody out there has used it and happy with the results.

They are expensive but I think they work well. The bars you can get similar probably cheaper in your area. The drink I have not found anything yet that works as well, but the taste sucks. My $.02

Gon4,

I use Hammer products for long mountain and road bike rides. They help to a certain degree. I like HEED electrolite mix,
Hammer jell, Perpetuem, and recoverite. I don't know how they compare price wise with WA.

They are not substitutes for being in shape and eating well.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-11 AT 01:58PM (MST)[p]It is ok but honestly...I think I've gotten just as good from Gatorade with a couple of bananas (or even dehydrated bananas). Also remember that man has lived and survived the mountains and deserts from the beginning of time with just plain old water. Hydration is life.

I live down in the desert of So. Utah at about 2500 ft. elevation. I hunt in norther utah at 10,000 and above. The product that I have tried and liked the very most is the Altitude Advantage. I couldnt believe the difference from one year to the next when I used. No Altitude sickness, it was great.

I dont mind their drink products either they are pretty good as well. But as for me being a low lander and hunting high the Altitude Advantage is great.

I use the hydrate and recover and energy and focus drink mixes and really like them. The bars seem to be about the same as others you can get at REI, but most of the others don't support hunting.

The hydrate works well for recovery....I tried mixing it with cocktails one night, but still had a headache the next day

Have been using their products for a couple of years now with very effective results. I have used the Energy and Focus and the Hydrate and Recover and have been very satisfied with the results. I have a few hunting buddies that swear by the Hy-Altitude Advantage. They hunt at altitude in Colorado every year and say that have not had any signs of altitude sickness since using the product. The gels are worth every penny. Had a hunting partner hit the wall really hard during a recent backpack trip while hauling out camp and a coues buck. Had one gel about a 1/3 of the way back and another at about the 1/2 way mark and there was noticeable difference in his performance. Over the last 8 months I have lost over 107lbs. During my transformation I have relied heavily on a balanced diet(3 square meals),exercise, and meal replacements for my 2nd and 4th snacks that are between my meals. I rely totally on the Meal Replacement and Recovery Shake as well as the Energy Bars for this purpose. I really enjoy the taste of the chocolate shake and peanut butter chocolate swirl bars. Wildness Athlete has been a huge part of my success. Keep it coming WA!!!!

I am a big fan of Wilderness Athlete! I really like the Hydrate and recovery. I use it year round, and it really helped while packing my bull out of the high country alone this year. I felt it made a hard trip more bearable than it might have been. I used the H&R, E&F, and the bars on that trip, and I am very happy with the way I felt, during and after.

Just a note: In the past they have had a one day HALF OFF SALE in early March. Last year it was around the 12th. Might want to check the website daily for deals.

Full disclosure-I have a connection to the company but no financial interest. However, anybody that knows me will tell you that I am a brutally straight shooter one way or the other.

I think the Peanut Butter Crunch bar in terms of taste and what you get out of it is the best on the market.

I use, on an almost daily basis, the Meal Replacement and Recovery Shake with a scoop of Energy & Focus mixed in (aka the Superman shake). Based on my research the Meal Replacement is a great supplement and the Energy & Focus has some kind of magical restoritive powers I don't pretend to understand. I swear that my mental accuity and ability to recollect names and facts is better when I use it. In fact, I keep a tub of it at the office just in case somebody wants to see if I am really worth my exorbident hourly rate. It hasn't failed me yet.

The Altitude Advantage is not as good as Diamox in my opinion but then again it doesn't require a prescription and has no side effects so it is what I now use for 12 to 14ers and it seems to work pretty well for me.

Gels-I was with CDN on that trip and can personally attest that what he said was true and accurate. Those gels kept that hunter going all the way back the truck.

Now having said all that, I still occasionally use Hammers Recoverite for hot weather when I am pushing a lot of fluids just because it is very light, goes down easy and tends to stay there. It also tastes pretty neutral if it comes back up.

I think you will continue to see improvements in the existing WA product line as well as some great new additions. I will keep using and promoting it as long as it keeps working for me.
